Visiting Hours

Visiting Hours Encourage Friends and Family to Spend Time with Patients

We encourage family members and friends of our patients to visit frequently. In order to provide optimum rest for our inpatients as they heal—yet allow for them to spend therapeutic time visiting with family and friends during recuperation—visiting hours are set for the Medical Surgical Unit as well as the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Visiting hours can be tailored to meet the needs of our patients and their loved ones. Please check with the nurse for details. We ask that visitors who are not feeling well (fever, cough, other symptoms of illness) refrain from visiting until symptoms subside.

General University Hospitals visitation guidelines for adult patients

  • Please check with the nurse for any specific visitation guidelines for your nursing unit.
  • Our recommendation is to limit the number of support persons (visitors) at any one time. Our suggestion is two per patient.
  • Please check with nursing personnel before visiting with children and infants.
  • Please don’t visit if you are sick or might have a cold or other illness.
  • Ensure that children who visit are supervised by an adult other than the patient.
  • Keep voices low.
  • Please do not bring latex balloons to the hospital.

Medical Surgical Unit

11 a.m.-8 p.m.
Four visitors at a time.

Adults: Open visitation during visiting hours as patient condition and unit activity allows.

Children: Two children at a time may visit at the patient’s bedside and must remain in the patient’s room during the visit. An accompanying adult is responsible for children’s safety during the visit and must attend to the children at all times. Children causing distraction to other patients and/or visitors may be asked to leave.

Intensive Care Unit

11 a.m.-8 p.m.
Two visitors at a time.

Adults: Visitors are to use the phone outside the ICU entrance to check with the nurse prior to visiting. Staff may ask visitors to step out of the unit in the event of an emergent situation.

Children: Children under the age of 12 years are permitted only under special circumstances and with approval from the Nurse Manager, Nursing Supervisor or Charge Nurse. Children under the age of 16 are to be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Emergency Department

Visiting is limited to two people at a time. Please note, no visitors under the age of 18 years are permitted in any isolation rooms.
