Internal Medicine Curriculum

Goals and Objectives of the Curriculum

The program curriculum contains the following educational components:

  • Overall educational goals for the program
  • Competency-based goals and objectives for each assignment at each educational level
  • Didactic sessions
  • Delineation of resident physician responsibilities

ACGME Core Competencies

Patient Care

Residents demonstrate their ability to provide patient care that is compassionate, appropriate and effective for the treatment of health problems.

Medical Knowledge

Residents demonstrate knowledge of established and evolving biomedical, clinical, epidemiological and social-behavioral sciences and apply this knowledge to their patients.

Practice-Based Learning and Improvement

Residents are required to investigate and self-evaluate their care of patients; appraise and assimilate scientific evidence; and, continuously improve patient care based on constant self-assessment and lifelong learning.

System-Based Practice

Residents demonstrate awareness of and responsiveness to the larger context of health care. They consistently and effectively use resources within the system to provide optimal health care.

Professionalism

Residents demonstrate a commitment to carrying out professional responsibilities and an adherence to ethical principles.

Interpersonal Skills and Communication

Residents demonstrate communication and collaboration skills allowing them to effectively exchange information with patients, their families and other health professionals.

PGY-1

  • 7 Blocks: Inpatient Medicine (Includes Floor, Nights, Regional ICU, Geriatrics)
  • 1 Block: Cardiology
  • 1 Block: Pulmonology
  • 1 Block: Emergency Medicine
  • 1 Block: Ambulatory Medicine
  • 1 Block: Medical ICU at UH Cleveland Medical Center
  • 1 Block: Rural Selective

PGY-2

  • 5 Blocks: Inpatient Medicine (Includes Floor, Nights, Regional ICU, Geriatrics)
  • 1 Block: Inpatient Rural Medicine
  • 1 Block: Hematology/Oncology
  • 1 Block: Neurology
  • 1 Block: Gastroenterology
  • 1 Block: Case Western Reserve Research Course
  • 1 Block: Ambulatory Medicine
  • 1 Block: Infectious Disease
  • 1 Block: Elective

PGY-3

  • 5 Blocks: Inpatient Medicine (Includes Floor, Nights, Regional ICU, Geriatrics)
  • 1 Block: Rheumatology
  • 1 Block: Endocrinology
  • 1 Block: Nephrology
  • 1 Block: Ambulatory Medicine
  • 1 Block: Practice Management
  • 1 Block: Hospitalist
  • 2 Blocks: Elective
