Pediatric Epilepsy and Pediatric Seizures
Epilepsy is a condition that causes a child to have seizures. It is one of the most common disorders of the nervous system and affects children and adults of all races and ethnic backgrounds. Controlling seizures by reducing them or eliminating them completely is important to a child’s growth, development and overall quality of life.
At UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s, our internationally recognized Comprehensive Level IV Pediatric Epilepsy Center brings together pediatric epileptologists to diagnose, treat and sometimes cure epilepsy in children through surgery. Our pediatric specialists are also participating in two clinical trials for Dravet Syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut—two rare forms of epilepsy.
Headache Diagnosis and Treatment
Headaches, particularly in teenagers, are very common and can be caused by a wide range of conditions. Knowing what to look for and when to seek specialized neurology care are both very important. Spinal Muscular Atrophy Specialization
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is caused by a defect in a specific gene called the survival motor neuron gene. Although it is very rare, this disease is considered the number one genetic cause of death for infants. In patients with SMA, the survival motor neuron is either missing some information or contains an extra copy of the gene. As a result, they don’t produce a protein needed by nerves in the spinal cord that control muscle movement. These muscles, which can include those necessary for breathing and swallowing, then become progressively weaker and diminished.
Our specialized pediatric SMA Clinic and Treatment Program is focused on helping these individuals with advanced therapies and newly approved treatments, giving them hope and improved quality of life.

Neurofibromatosis Multidisciplinary Specialization
Neurofibromatosis 2 is a genetic disorder that causes nerve sheath tumors. These tumors can affect balance, auditory or facial nerves. Other types of tumors can also develop in the central nervous system or spinal cord.
