Faster, more accurate diagnosis. Compassionate care with a focus on family. Expert treatment. Immediate improvement in quality of life. Access to innovative treatments at the forefront of science.
Those are the goals of our internationally acclaimed Division of Pediatric Epilepsy at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. Our pediatric epilepsy specialists are expert in the evaluation and treatment of epilepsy in infants, children and adolescents.
As one of the most experienced epilepsy teams in the country, we provide innovative and individualized care for even the most complex seizure disorders, offered in a culture of compassion that focuses on the patient and his or her family.
Epilepsy requires aggressive, integrated care. Our experts include board-certified, fellowship-trained pediatric epileptologists and neurosurgeons working closely with a coordinated team of pediatric specialists. We can also provide access to advanced medications and innovative dietary and surgical therapies – in some cases well before they are widely available.

In many cases it is possible to stop seizures or significantly reduce their frequency. Our approach may be as simple as changes in diet or use of nerve stimulation. If other therapies cannot control seizures, we focus on early identification of children who will do well with surgery, which can often be performed via innovative, less invasive techniques.
Since 2001, the Epilepsy Center at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital has been recognized by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers as a Comprehensive Level IV Pediatric Epilepsy Center — the highest possible designation. We have also been honored by U.S. News & World Report as one of America’s best children’s hospitals in neurology and neurosurgery.
The multidisciplinary epilepsy teams at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital work closely with specialists at the acclaimed Neurological Institute Epilepsy Center at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, also in Cleveland, Ohio. The goals: Early diagnosis through innovative, cutting-edge diagnostic techniques, a compassionate family-centered focus, and treatment that cannot be equaled in the northeast Ohio area or nationally.
Our collaborative approach means consultation with experts in neonatology, pediatric neurology, pediatric neuropsychology and psychiatry, developmental/behavioral pediatrics, radiology and pediatric neurosurgery.
Families also have access to a pediatric epilepsy coordinator, who helps with physician referrals and appointments and provides one-on-one education to families, nurses and schools, and child life specialists, who explain all procedures to families and children in order to reduce stress.
An epilepsy diagnosis and all the test and procedures that go with it can be overwhelming to families, so it is important for them to know that they are not alone.
The Pediatric Epilepsy Support Group gives families the opportunity to connect with others who are facing the same difficulties, share their stories and get advice. This network of support can help children and their families face the struggles of epilepsy with strength and hope.
Meetings of the support group are held regularly at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and are coordinately by our pediatric epilepsy staff.
