Find Comforting Care with Hospice Services at University Hospitals Parma Medical Center

UH Hospice at UH Parma Medical Center provides comprehensive hospice care for patients and their families. Hospice is a program of palliative and supportive services that provides physical, psychological, social and spiritual care for people faced with a terminal diagnosis or those at the end stages of a disease process that is no longer responding to treatment. The focus of hospice care is comfort, not curative, care. The hospice care team provides pain and symptom management.

Dignified End of Life Services

Hospice care neither hastens nor prolongs death, but rather affirms life, providing better quality and dignity for the remainder of a person’s life. Hospice care treats the person, not the disease, and focuses on the entire family, not just the patient.

The UH Hospice care team consists of an integrated team of hospice specialists, including:

  • Bereavement support and counseling specialists
  • Chaplains
  • Hospice aides
  • Medical director
  • Pharmacy support
  • Registered nurses
  • Social workers
  • Trained volunteers

The hospice care team provides direct care to the patients with two to three visits per week, and on an as needed basis. The care team has on-call staff available 24/7 to assist patients and families with care as needed.

Hospice Care on Site or at Home

The UH Hospice team provides care anywhere a patient calls home, whether it be in a house, assisted living, or a long-term care setting. We also care for patients at our 10-bed residential hospice, nestled in a wooded area overlooking a private lake at in Parma, Ohio. Our residents each have a private room with an attached patio, full bathroom with shower and a television. Home-cooked meals are provided alongside around-the-clock nursing care.

Bereavement Services Provide Comfort to Family Members and Loved Ones

Our bereavement coordinators assist patients and families with support through their loved one's journey, up to 13 months after their journey’s end. The bereavement coordinator works with all members affected by the patient’s death. At UH Parma Medical Center, we understand that each family’s situation is unique, so services are customized to meet their individual needs and can include:

  • One-on-one support meetings
  • Monthly mailings
  • Small grief support groups
  • Telephone support

Volunteers are an Essential Part of Support Services

At UH Hospice, volunteers offer support to patients as well as hospice team staff. Support services offered to our patients include, but are not limited to:

  • Assistance with meals
  • Companionship
  • Errands
  • Funeral home visitation
  • Homemaking tasks
  • Medication pick-ups

Volunteers may also assist our staff by making telephone calls to families, preparing mailings and filing and assisting our chef with meal preparation and distribution to the patients. Spiritual volunteers are another also available to patients and staff. These specialized volunteers are trained individuals who offer prayer and support as requested by patient and family.

If you are interested in volunteering at UH Hospice, there is an eight-week volunteer training course offered twice a year, during spring and fall. For more information, please contact volunteer coordinator Sharon Secura, at 440-743-4943.

Insurance and Admittance Information

Hospice costs are covered by many insurance programs. For those over 65 years of age, the Medicare Hospice benefit option covers most aspects of hospice care. Our residential hospice does have a daily room and board charge, which is not covered under most insurance programs.

An admission to hospice requires a doctor’s order as well as an evaluation by a registered nurse. This evaluation can take place in the hospital, patient's home, nursing home or assisted living facility.
