Labor & Delivery

Offering Expert Care for Moms and Babies Through Labor, Delivery, and Beyond

Nothing compares with the excitement of the start of labor: After months of waiting for your baby to arrive, you have entered the final stretch, and it will not be long before you will be holding your new little one in your arms.

A mother’s journey toward a memorable and happy delivery begins when she pre-registers to have her baby at University Hospitals MacDonald Women’s Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. We are recognized nationally for our trained staff, state-of-the-art facilities, and high level of care for women and newborns, so every new mother can be assured that she and her baby will receive the most comprehensive care possible.

Arriving at the Hospital

When a woman arrives at the hospital with her support person, she will be taken to Labor & Delivery on the second floor, where she will be assessed and monitored for progress throughout her entire labor.

Our physicians, nurses and other experts are sensitive to the emotional and physical needs of their patients. That is why mothers-to-be and new mothers are cared for in beautiful, private accommodations. The contemporary facilities create an atmosphere of comfort for excited parents-in-waiting. Deluxe private rooms with upgraded amenities such as gourmet meals, in-room refrigerator and computer port are also available.

Expert Delivery Team

When baby’s arrival is imminent, the delivery team moves with the precision of an orchestra to set everything into place. High-tech equipment needed for delivery has been tucked neatly away in the room until this moment. While all of the preparations are going on, other staff members continue to monitor mother and baby and offer encouragement in preparation for the big arrival.

In addition to traditional deliveries, UH MacDonald Women’s Hospital offers midwife delivery, water births and doula services.

Care After Delivery

Right after birth, the baby will be placed on the mother’s chest, skin-to-skin. Skin-to-skin care provides many benefits to both the mother and her baby, making them feel calmer, more comfortable, and more secure. The baby may even cry less, and the mother’s body temperature will adjust to help her new baby maintain normal body temperature. The baby’s father can be involved by providing skin-to-skin care as well. We also encourage mother and baby to stay together (rooming-in) as much as possible. There are very few times a newborn will need to leave his mother’s room.

Since breastfeeding offers so many benefits for babies, we encourages new mothers to attempt breastfeeding their newborns soon after delivery. The nurses on the labor and delivery and postpartum units are trained to assist with breastfeeding, and lactation consultants are available for new mothers during their stay.

Baby-Friendly Designation

At UH MacDonald Women’s Hospital, high-tech coupled with high-touch is the hallmark of great care. The hospital is proud to have earned the prestigious Baby-Friendly designation, a distinction that places emphasis on mother/baby bonding, breastfeeding, and other practices that are beneficial to mother and baby.
