Clear Liquid Diet

University Hospitals MacDonald Women's Hospital staff members provide patients with a variety of instructions to follow prior to and following their scheduled procedures. Patients may be instructed to drink only clear fluids. These clear fluids should be transparent enough to see through and include clear juice, broth, hard candy, ice and gelatin.

Examples of clear liquid diet options:

  • Water
  • Clear broth such as chicken or beef, bouillon, or fat free consommé
  • Clear fruit juice without pulp such as apple, grape and cranberry (patients should avoid orange and tomato juice)
  • Tea or coffee with added sweetener (no cream or milk)
  • JELL-O, popsicles and hard candy
