Images from Havana, Matanzas and Cleveland

Re-Discover Cuba at our photography exhibition featuring the works of local artists Greg Martin and Steven Standley. Images from Havana, Matanzas and Cleveland’s Cuban community capture the complex, diverse and sometimes contradictory nature of Cuban culture.

Through the Cleveland Foundation’s Creative Fusion program, Greg and Steven traveled to Cuba to capture these images in Matanzas and Old Havana, Cuba.

Cleveland-based artist Greg Martin has been focusing his work on the wet- plate collodion photography process for over a decade in both traditional and unconventional works that push the boundaries of the medium. Born in 1966, Greg received his BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1989. Given the difficulty sourcing and transporting the necessary materials, it was likely the first time in decades that the wet- plate collodion process was used in Cuba.

Steven Standley is a notable northeastern Ohio visual artist – training early in his career at Cooper Union in New York City. Steve is unique as he is also the Chief Administrative Officer of University Hospitals. He has blended his passion for the arts and design in both “lives” that he leads – one as an abstract painter and photographer and the second as a senior leader of a very large health system. Steve is the co-founder of Emerge-Cleveland which is a collaborative group of social entrepreneurs who invest in emerging artists in emerging districts.

An Opening Night Reception will be held:
Friday, November 3 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.

The Through the Lens: Re-Discovering Cubaexhibition will be on display at UH Cleveland Medical Center from November 2, 2017 – January 2, 2018.

Proceeds from the sale of limited-edition prints will benefit University Hospitals Otis Moss Health Center.
