UH Alumnus and the 2021 Distinguished Physician Award Honoree, Dr. Richard Martin gives back

UH Alumni Newsletter | January 2022

Over the course of nearly 50 years, Richard J. Martin, MD, Director, UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital Neonatal Research Programs has touched the lives of thousands of families. Named the inaugural Drusinsky-Fanaroff Chair in Neonatology in 2006, Dr. Martin served as UH Rainbow’s Division Chief of Neonatology for 13 years before becoming the division’s Director of Research in 1987. When Dr. Martin came to the United States from his native Australia in the early 1970s, the field of neonatology was in its infancy and piqued his interest. Today, Dr. Martin is an internationally recognized authority in neonatology whose work has transformed the care of premature infants.

“My entire academic career was motivated by what I’ve experienced here at UH," shared Dr. Martin. "I’ve had outstanding mentorship over the years. My major passion is to return that to the next generation of academic and clinical leaders at this institution."

Drs. Richard and Patricia MartinDrs. Richard and Patricia Martin at the University Hospitals Society of 1866 annual celebration in September 2021, where Richard Martin, MD, received the 2021 UH Distinguished Physician Award.

With a longstanding career in neonatology, Dr. Martin understands the importance of research and clinical trials and he understands how important donor support is needed to continue this valuable work. This is why he chooses to give back to UH each year. His legacy is in the lives of the families, colleagues and fellows he’s helped, all of whom have benefitted immensely from his expertise and compassion.

Dr. Martin explains, “While we can expect the hospital to provide the structural supports (equipment, overhead, space), there are many things that need to be supplemented, not just for patient care but for discovery. An annual gift could mean the ability to bring a visiting professor or to support a clinician in professional development. It’s these special things that can make the biggest difference in the work we do for our colleagues and our patients.”
