About

Joshua R. Beer, DO, is a fellowship-trained primary care sports medicine physician at University Hospitals and a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery in the Division of Sports Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He is board-certified in Family Medicine with a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine.

A firm believer in “motion is medicine”, Dr. Beer enjoys working with athletes of all ages and skill levels to keep them active in their pursuits. Additionally, Dr. Beer recognizes the importance of maintaining an active lifestyle as a means to prevent and manage chronic medical conditions. His interests encompass all aspects of sports medicine, including acute and chronic injuries, sports-related concussion, sports physicals, musculoskeletal ultrasound, and non-operative procedures such as corticosteroid, hyaluronic acid, and platelet-rich plasma injections.

Originally from western Pennsylvania, Dr. Beer graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biological Sciences from the University of Pittsburgh. He went on to earn his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, which he attended on scholarship through the Health Professions Scholarship Program of the U.S. Navy. Beginning his active duty service as a U.S. Navy lieutenant, he completed his internship in Family Medicine at Naval Hospital Pensacola followed by his residency in Family Medicine at Naval Hospital Jacksonville. Upon completion of residency, he served for two years as a physician on the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75), completing a deployment as part of Operation Inherent Resolve.

Dr. Beer then completed his Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Camp Pendleton. During this time, he served as a team physician for several sports programs across high school, junior college, and military leagues. Advancing to the rank of lieutenant commander, he continued his sports medicine career at Marine Corps Depot Parris Island before separating from service in August 2022.

Dr. Beer and his wife, Roxanne, have two daughters, Eliana and Genevieve.

I do NOT like having to call a central appointment phone number and having to go through hoops to reach the actual provider for answers to questions. I had to wait 3 days before finally getting a callback.

This visit was at the Sports Injury Clinic. I have a sports related injury. I was very please how quickly I could get an appointment. I also appreciated that the scheduler suggested I make an appointment rather than walk-in even though the information on the UH website says you may walk-in. This way I would be guaranteed to be seen. Everyone at the clinic was very professional and kind. The physician I saw was very good and assured me that with time my injury would resolve and that no extra imaging would be needed. One of the few positive experiences dealing with today's broken healthcare and insurance system.

Industry Relationships

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. These practitioner-industry relationships assist in developing new drugs, devices and therapies and in providing medical education aimed at improving quality of care and enhancing clinical outcomes. At the same time, UH understands that these relationships may create a conflict of interest. In providing this information, UH desires to assist patients in talking with their practitioners about industry relationships and how those relationships may impact their medical care.

UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
