About

Daniel McFarland, MD, is a board-certified emergency medicine physician and a fellowship-trained primary care sports medicine (PCSM) specialist at University Hospitals Drusinsky Sports Medicine Institute. He also serves as an assistant professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Dr. McFarland’s practice focuses on the evaluation and treatment of both pediatric and adult patients with sports- or trauma-related injuries. His special clinical interests include joint injections and procedures, MSK-ultrasound diagnostics, splinting/casting and percutaneous ultrasound-guided needle tenotomy.

In addition to his medical practice at University Hospitals, Dr. McFarland is strongly invested in the community. He is employed by the NFL and provides emergency sideline coverage at Cleveland Browns home games. He is also the assistant team physician for athletics at Kent State University and the head team physician at Streetsboro, Ravenna, and Southeast high schools. Finally, he is involved with event medicine providing coverage at local events/races such as the Cleveland Marathon.

Dr. McFarland is an accomplished presenter, lecturer and researcher and has authored and co-authored numerous papers and book chapters related to his areas of expertise. The recipient of several awards for his efforts in both patient care and medical education, Dr. McFarland is a member in good standing of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) and the American Board of Emergency Medicine.

After completing his undergraduate training at the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering, graduating summa cum laude, Dr. McFarland went on to earn his medical doctorate at the West Virginia University School of Medicine. He then completed a residency in emergency medicine at Bellevue Hospital in New York City, New York. Dr. McFarland further advanced his training at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center where he completed a fellowship in sports medicine and earned a certificate of added qualification (CAQ) in sports medicine.

Dr McFarland was very knowledgeable and personable. After thorough assessment he recommended cortisone shot. He and support staff were very patient when I had a vagus nerve flare up. Excellent appointment all around.

I'm very impressed by Dr. McFarland, he's incredibly kind and attentive and truly listens to your concerns and questions and answers them clearly so I can understand what's what. I'm feeling extremely lucky to have him as my University Hospitals orthopedic surgeon, and would highly him to anyone needing orthopedic care.

My visit with Dr. McFarland was exceptional. I deeply appreciated his ability to meet me where I was as a patient. As a healthcare provider myself, this really stuck out to me. He put my goals at the center of our discussion and he facilitated my decision making process in a way that created space for what I needed.

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized.
