About

Gerald Ferretti, DDS, MS, MPH, is a pediatric dentist, Chief of the Division of Pediatric Dentistry and the Anne Hunter Jenkins Endowed Master Clinician in Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. He also is Professor and Chair, Pediatric Dentistry, Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine and Professor of Pediatrics, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Dr. Ferretti is board certified in pediatric dentistry. His special interests are oral facial traumatic injuries and craniofacial anomalies/syndromes. He was appointed to the UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital staff in 2005.

Dr. Ferretti graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in natural science from Assumption College Worcester, Mass. He earned a Doctor of Dental Science from the Georgetown University School of Dentistry, Washington, D.C. He served a residency at Southbury Training School and Hospital for the Handicapped, Southbury, Conn., and earned his Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry and his Master’s of Dental Science from the University of Connecticut Graduate School, Farmington, Conn., in 1980. In 2004 he received a Master’s of Public Health in Health Services Management from the College of Public Health, University of Kentucky, Lexington, Ky.

Prior to joining the UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital staff, Dr. Ferretti was Director of the University of Kentucky Mobile Outreach Program, Clinical Director of the University of Kentucky Dental Care Plan and Professor of Public Health at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, Ky. He was the Division Chief of Pediatric Dentistry there previous to these positions and had been on staff since 1980.

Dr. Ferretti has received numerous research grants from public and corporate sources, frequently for studies related to the dental health of at-risk children. He has published more than three dozen papers in leading pediatric dentistry and public health journals. He also is a frequent presenter and speaker on pediatric dentistry, particularly on pediatric sedation, at local, regional and national dental meetings and conferences.

Dr. Ferretti is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and President Elect of the Board of Trustees, College of Diplomates of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry. His numerous other professional memberships include the American Society for Pediatric Sedation, International Association of Pediatric Dentists, American Cleft Palate Association, American Public Health Association and American Association of Public Health Dentists.

Industry Relationships

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. These practitioner-industry relationships assist in developing new drugs, devices and therapies and in providing medical education aimed at improving quality of care and enhancing clinical outcomes. At the same time, UH understands that these relationships may create a conflict of interest. In providing this information, UH desires to assist patients in talking with their practitioners about industry relationships and how those relationships may impact their medical care.

UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
