About
Philip Barger, MD, MSc, is the director of the Adult Congenital Heart Disease program, part of the Congenital Heart Collaborative at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital. He is a clinical professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and is board-certified in Cardiovascular Disease and Adult Congenital Heart Disease.
Dr. Barger joined University Hospitals in 2021. Prior to that, he served as director of the Center for Adults with Congenital Heart Disease at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Previous posts include attending physician at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Baylor Heart Clinic in Houston, Ben Taub General Hospital in Houston and St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston.
Dr. Barger earned his undergraduate degree in Zoology at the Ohio State University and his medical degree at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He did his residency in internal medicine at University Hospitals and completed research and adult cardiology fellowships at Washington University School of Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital.
Dr. Barger has been active in the field of cardiovascular research and has been awarded numerous governmental and non-governmental grants to conduct these studies. He has authored nearly 50 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, reviews and other manuscripts throughout his career and has served as a reviewer for several prestigious medical journals. Additionally, he has been an invited lecturer and presenter at various annual meetings, conferences, Grand Rounds and other professional summits.

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. These practitioner-industry relationships assist in developing new drugs, devices and therapies and in providing medical education aimed at improving quality of care and enhancing clinical outcomes. At the same time, UH understands that these relationships may create a conflict of interest. UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
