About

Mauricio Arruda, MD, is Director of the Electrophysiology Center, Director of the Atrial Fibrillation Center and the John R. Antonucci Master Clinician of Cardiovascular Innovation at University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute. He is also a Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Dr. Arruda earned his medical degree from the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas in Brazil. He completed an internship in internal medicine at Loyola University in Chicago and residency in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic. As part of his postdoctoral training, Dr. Arruda completed five fellowships, in cardiovascular disease, then pacing and noninvasive electrophysiology at Dante Pazzanese Cardiology Institute in San Paulo, Brazil. He then completed a clinical fellowship in electrophysiology and pacing at Toronto General Hospital in Ontario, Canada, as well as clinical and research fellowships in electrophysiology at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. His extensive training has led to a unique clinical prowess over the past two decades.

Dr. Arruda is regarded by other physicians as an international expert in the field of clinical cardiac electrophysiology, with particular skill in the diagnosis and treatment of complex arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia, including optimal catheter ablation techniques. Dr. Arruda also performs left atrial appendage closures with the Watchman device for stroke prevention. He has authored more than 240 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts and book chapters. He is a highly sought speaker and educator, having presented at over 150 national and international conferences. He is also an invited reviewer for many distinguished publications, including Circulation Electrophysiology, Journal of Atrial Fibrillation, Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology, Journal of the American College of Cardiology and Journal of Interventional Cardiovascular Electrophysiology.

In addition to his large clinical practice and academic endeavors, Dr. Arruda is an avid researcher, leading numerous national research studies evaluating techniques, devices and medications that aim to improve patient care and outcomes. He is actively involved in several organizations including the American College of Cardiology, Heart Rhythm Society and World Congress on Cardiac Pacing and Electrophysiology.

Dr. Arruda is fluent in English and Portuguese languages.

At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
