Peripheral artery disease (PAD) occurs when fatty deposits form plaque in the vessels that carry blood to the legs or feet. This buildup restricts or blocks blood flow, depriving your muscles of adequate oxygen and nutrients.
If PAD becomes severe, critical limb ischemia (CLI) may occur. CLI is defined as the presence of rest pain, ulcer or gangrene. If not treated promptly, it can lead to disability and even loss of a foot or leg to amputation.
