Clinical Training

From the first day of fellowship, fellows are provided with a diverse group of clinical experiences that ensures our fellows graduate with the necessary and latest skills for neonatal management. During their three years of fellowship, fellows are required to complete 12 four week blocks of clinical service in the NICU, on the Rainbow 4 Transitional Care Unit, and in University Hospitals MacDonald Women's Hospital performing antenatal consultations and running neonatal resuscitations. Also included in the required clinical experiences are a Cardiothoracic Surgery rotation and a NICU Acting Attending experience. Various elective rotations are also available and all fellows are strongly encouraged to participate in one 4-week elective block during their 3rd year of fellowship. Fellows also serve as MedCommand for the many critically ill infants transported to the University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital's NICU. We receive patients from hospitals all over Northeast Ohio including other tertiary care centers, and occasionally from nearby states. Whether by air or ground, fellows will accompany the transport team for the sickest infants. On average, the NICU receives approximately 300 transports yearly, with the fellow accompanying 10 percent of these transports.

All fellows are required to participate in at least one Quality Improvement initiative during their fellowship training. Rainbow, and particularly the Division of Neonatology, has a long history of work in Patients Safety and QI, Dr. Michele Walsh is the Neonatology lead for the Ohio Perinatal Quality Collaborative which has been recognized as a very productive state QI collaborative. There are abundant QI projects in place for fellows to join, both within the Division and in collaboration with other divisions, and fellows are welcome to begin a new project with a faculty mentor. Many fellows have presented their QI work in national forums and have published manuscripts stemming from these projects.
