Didactic Training

A weekly didactic conference series is provided for PEM fellows in our program. Within this conference series, all content from the American Board of Pediatrics/American Board of EM subsection on Pediatric Emergency Medicine is covered on a repeating cycle, so that all fellows within our program will be exposed to all core topics in Pediatric Emergency Medicine throughout the courses of their fellowship training. Our fellows’ conferences—known as PEM Fellows’ Rounds—are held weekly and cover a wide range of medical, surgical, educational, administrative, and research topics. Simulation sessions are incorporated as an important element of our weekly didactic half-days. Clinical scheduling in our Peds ED is coordinated so that all fellows have “protected time” to participate fully in our didactic conference each week.

In addition to reviewing core PEM topics weekly, we incorporate board-review sessions, PEM Journal Clubs, PEM Management Conferences, clinical case discussions, Radiology Rounds, hands-on POCUS training sessions, and Visual Diagnosis/PEM Pearls sessions into our didactic conferences on an ongoing basis.

Fellows are integrated into our PEM Division Faculty meetings, which occur twice monthly and incorporate educational content, as well as a monthly PEM Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance Conference and various administrative discussions.

A robust series of conferences and workshops on topics including grant-writing, quality improvement concepts, clinical teaching, health disparities, financial planning, and career development is provided for all pediatric fellows at Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital. Fellows are excused from clinical duties in order to take advantage of these excellent educational opportunities.

A multitude of other educational conference and experiences are available to fellows as one of the benefits of being incorporated into a large, world-class academic medical center which serves as the primary teaching site for Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. Some examples of excellent educational opportunities that are available to fellows within our program include:

  • Rainbow Pediatric Residency Program Conference Series (daily didactic conferences on a huge variety of topics)
  • Department of Pediatrics Grand Rounds
  • Department of Pediatrics Advocacy Conference series
  • Ethics Rounds
  • Case School of Medicine Annual Educational Retreat

Fellows in our program are given the opportunity to attend the National PEM Fellows’ Conference annually. Our program provides funding for travel expenses to attend this conference. The program is also committed to supporting travel expenses for all PEM fellows invited to present at national conferences.
