The Division and Institution

In this division we provide around-the-clock intervention and treatment for children with congenital or acquired heart disease. As an approved Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps Center, our division is staffed by top professionals trained in a multitude of cardiac specialties.

Thorough and highly sophisticated testing allows us to get an accurate picture of just what the problem is. Treatment covers everything from mild arrhythmia and valve blockages to heart murmurs and complex congenital heart defects of the single ventricle type.

To help you achieve adequate training in the state of the art facility at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, we offer

Cardiovascular Physiology and Pathology

This five day teaching program is held on a yearly basis for the second year medical students at Case Western Reserve University. The trainees participate in the teaching and have, over the course of their training, the opportunity to review over 200 heart specimens in our collection.

In addition to regularly scheduled conferences, the Division of Pediatric Cardiology sponsors at least one visiting professor per year. The Liebman Visiting Professorship, a program now in its 20th year, sponsors a prominent practitioner for two days of lectures, presentations and rounds in an intimate setting which encourages a high level of interaction between the Visiting Professor and fellows. Visiting Professors through this program have included pediatric cardiologists with varied specialized areas of expertise, pediatric pathologists, and pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons.

Fellows, residents, and medical students rotating through the division, are also expected to attend Pediatric Grand rounds as well as relevant conferences presented by other pediatric subspecialties and other departments within the hospital.

Fellows attend and present at pediatric cardiology meetings on the local, state, and national levels. They are encouraged to attend special seminars at Heart House, the educational institution of the American Congress of Cardiology. If they define a special area of interest that is best addressed by a period of training at another institution, the availability of an off-site elective is offered.

World-Class Research at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital

Just 50 years ago, many pediatric diseases were posting survival rates as low as 10 percent, however today, thanks in large part to extensive medical research, those numbers have climbed significantly.

UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital’s Horvitz Pediatric Research Center is a national leader in pediatric research, receiving more than $30 million annually from the National Institutes of Health, NASA, and others. The Center enables physicians and scientists to search for solutions to diseases and ailments that afflict children and provides our patients with access to the latest medical developments & breakthroughs.

The Heart Center is deeply involved in research to design and improve techniques and technology for pediatric cardiac health. For example, our physician-scientists are currently perfecting one of two standard treatment options for hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). Called three-stage palliation, the procedure offers an excellent reconstruction option that, over the course of a child’s first two to four years of life, changes the HLHS heart into a two-chamber organ that performs the work of a normal four-chamber heart.

Relationship to Other Programs

The transition from the role of the pediatric resident to the pediatric cardiology trainee is among the most dramatic for all specialties. While most pediatric residents develop a foundation in the clinical cardiac examination, the trainees must be able to use their clinical skills with confidence and accuracy for daily aspects of patient care. Mastery of the technologic aids available requires considerable time and hands on experience with close faculty supervision. For this reason pediatric cardiology patients are under the direct care of the cardiology trainee and the faculty members. The interface with other services is the key to a successful pediatric cardiac program not only from the standpoint of clinical care, but also education. The pediatric cardiology trainees have an extremely close working relationship with the intensive care faculty and fellows. The close relationship with the surgical service is evidenced by our shared conferences and office space. A fruitful area of collaboration occurs with anesthesia in the cardiac catheterization laboratory. In the ambulatory setting, the multi-disciplinary cardiovascular genetics clinics provide an excellent opportunity to discuss one of the most rapidly changing fields in medicine today. The trainees are central to the patient care process and they have a prime responsibility for resident and medical student education at the bedside and in the ambulatory setting.
