Clinical Research Funding Support and Opportunities

Internal Support

University Hospitals Institutional Relations and Development (IR&D) Department provides support for UH-employed physicians, researchers, and clinical teams seeking support for clinical research projects. All philanthropy, including grant proposals submitted to corporations, government funders, and local, national, and international foundations, must be reviewed and approved by IR&D, in accordance with GM-87 and IRD-1.

Depending on the size of the funding request, IR&D can provide the following types of support:

  • Managing relationships with the funders
  • Strategy & messaging development
  • Boilerplate institutional messaging
  • Proofreading
  • Letters of support (seeking and compiling)
  • Reporting (i.e., preparing reports to be submitted to funders for grant compliance)
  • Helping to identify grant opportunities for principal investigator research interests

Principal investigators must have the ability to devote time and resources to drafting technical and scientific parts of the grant. Principal investigators (or members of the clinical research support team) should have no direct contact with foundations without IR&D involvement.

If you are a principal investigator interested in seeking funding to support clinical research, please reach out to Jori Mintz, Manager, Foundation Relations, in IR&D at or complete the following Funding Request Form and submit to

External Resources

Consider your therapeutic area and sign up for newsletters through foundation websites that address that therapeutic area. For example, a cardiologist would want to sign up for e-communications from the American Heart Association. Please follow IR&D process above.

National Institutes of Health (NIH)

All funding requests to the NIH, Department of Defense, National Science Foundation and Department of Energy must be coordinated through the CWRU School of Medicine.

Investigator-Initiated Studies

Investigator-initiated studies are clinical studies initiated, developed, designed, and managed by a qualified sponsor who assumes sole responsibility for conduct and management of the study. Using a search engine (e.g. Google) search for any relevant company’s name and the words “investigator initiated studies” to find opportunities to apply for funding.

Have funding opportunities delivered directly to your inbox by signing up with a listserv that compiles funding announcements for clinical research.
