Convenient Access to Transplant Services in the Community
University Hospitals Transplant Institute has established a satellite Education and Evaluation Center in Akron, Ohio, bringing its renowned transplant services to Cuyahoga and Summit Counties and surrounding communities.
This satellite location will initially provide kidney transplant education and evaluation services to patients with kidney failure who are potential candidates for the procedure. UH Transplant Institute also plans to establish transplant evaluation clinics for patients with liver, heart and lung failure.
Our team recognizes that local access to a transplant program is vital to a patient’s decision about transplant as a treatment option for organ failure. For example, in Northeast Ohio, a patient on the kidney transplant waiting list will wait (on average) three to five years to receive a deceased donor kidney for transplantation. Every day that a patient waits to pursue this treatment option matters.
A multidisciplinary team of transplant specialists from University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, University Hospitals’ academic medical center, provides services at each satellite location, which include:
- Organ failure and transplantation process education
- Determination of transplant candidacy
- Partnership with local providers to improve timely referral
- Support programming to enhance patient and care provider support
The actual transplant procedure and initial follow-up care is performed at UH Cleveland Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
