First Hospital in Northeast Ohio to Offer Cyberknife®

University Hospitals is the first hospital in northeast Ohio to offer CyberKnife® treatment for patients. This advanced medical treatment targets and shrinks tumors anywhere in the body from more than 1,200 angles with sub-millimeter accuracy.

CyberKnife® is a non-invasive technology that offers a pain-free alternative to traditional open surgery or radiation therapy. CyberKnife® gives new hope for successful treatment of tumors and lesions previously diagnosed as untreatable or inoperable.

UH Offers Video-Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) to Treat Lung Cancer

The experts at the Division of Thoracic & Esophageal Surgery utilize VATS, a novel, minimally invasive alternative for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with lung cancer. VATS involves smaller incisions with no large muscle division, no rib division and no rib spreading, and offers results identical to those seen when using the open technique. With VATS, patients benefit from:

  • Less postoperative pain
  • Fewer complications
  • Lower transfusion requirements
  • Smaller incisions and less scarring
  • Faster return to normal activities

This novel technique is used at UH in 75 percent of all lobectomies (for lung tumors), and is also routinely used for pleural procedures (nodule wedge resection and pericardial window), thymic disorder and esophageal disease.

UH Seidman Cancer Center, part of the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, is one of the few sites nationwide that is able to offer early-phase clinical trials.
