ACGME Regulation Work Hours

The program is fully supportive of and compliant with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) duty hour regulations. We believe that we can provide a quality educational experience within this framework that emphasizes time for adequate rest and out-of-hospital activities.

Education, Conferences and Interviews

Across all years of residency training, if you are presenting at a conference, you will receive time for the presentation with adequate travel time. This will be counted as "education time" and not vacation time. Education time away from University Hospitals cannot exceed five workdays.

If you are a PGY-3 or PGY-4, you will have an additional ten days of interview time, which is separate from education and vacation time, and may be used in either year. This allows for interviewing for fellowship or attending faculty positions.

Residency Vacation Time

Please see the master rotation schedule, which defines eligible rotations on which vacation is permitted by PGY level.

• PGY-1: 15 days of vacation
• PGY-2: 15 days of vacation
• PGY-3: 15 days of vacation; 10 days for interviews
• PGY-4: 20 days of vacation; remaining interview days

Case Western Reserve University Affiliation and Benefits

All residents are automatically given affiliation with Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. This includes access to gym facilities, libraries, and email.

Fitness Center

All residents have free access to Case Western Reserve University's gym and athletic facilities. The available facilities include:

• Climbing wall
• Indoor track
• Racquetball courts
• Squash courts
• Swimming pool
• Tennis courts

The university gym is located across the street from the hospital. Discounted memberships to Case Western Reserve University’s private gym facility – One To One Fitness Center – are also available.
