Acting Internships & Electives

RBIO 4000A: Obstetrics Acting Internship (University Hospitals)

This is an advanced elective on Labor and Delivery, focusing on the care of intrapartum and antepartum obstetric patients with acute concerns. The student will assume responsibilities approximating those of an intern under the direct supervision of faculty and senior-level residents. The goals of the acting internship are 1) To improve the student's knowledge and skills in intrapartum care, vaginal delivery, surgery, and obstetric triage, and 2) To provide the student with more responsibility in order to improve clinical decision-making and obstetrical management. Acting interns will spend four weeks on Labor and Delivery. There will be 1-2 weekend night calls in addition to five days per week of weekday coverage. This rotation is offered for 4 weeks only. Prerequisites: All students must have completed their core clerkships in Ob/Gyn, Internal Medicine, and Surgery.

RBIO 4003A: Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (University Hospitals)

Description of Course:This elective is designed to allow the student the opportunity to evaluate all aspects of reproductive endocrinology and infertility. The student will assist faculty members and fellows in performing detailed histories, physical examinations, and reproductive surgery. Opportunities to observe IVF and andrology laboratory procedures can be arranged based on specific interest of student. OBJECTIVE: To provide a comprehensive view of the OB/GYN subspecialty of Reproductive Endocrinology. Students will have the opportunity to utilize historical data, physical examination and laboratory procedures to determine the causes of male and female infertility in addition to a number of reproductive endocrinology disorders, including polycystic ovary syndrome, recurrent pregnancy loss, hyperprolactinemia, hypothyroidism and type II diabetes mellitus. Students will be introduced to management of these conditions, and to the clinical and laboratory methods used for IVF. Students will participate in outpatient and inpatient care, and assist in reproductive surgery including laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, and robotic surgery. Students will participate in weekly discussion of an assigned reproductive endocrinology topic and attend weekly fellow didactic sessions. There are no night call responsibilities, and weekend call is optional. Prerequisites: (if any) Satisfactory completion of core Obstetric and Gynecology clerkship.

RBIO 4005A: Gynecologic Oncology Acting Internship (University Hospitals)

This A.I. is for students who have completed the basic core clerkship in OB/Gyn and are interested in enhancing their exposure to the subspecialty of Gynecologic Oncology. The objective is to provide exposure to both inpatient and outpatient management issues in the care of patients with gynecologic cancer and pre-malignant conditions. The experiences gained in this elective are intended to broaden the student's knowledge base and encourage independent and critical thinking. Students choosing this elective will be participating in aspects of inpatient and outpatient care that emphasize problem-solving, efficiency, clinical judgment and the independent development of patient assessments and plans. Students choosing this elective will be considered part of the gynecologic oncology team. Time will be spent with a Gynecologic Oncology attending in his/her clinic and assisting them with surgery. In clinic, the student will be encouraged to see patients independently, present their H & P formally to the attending and consider a patient care plan. Inpatient experience will be gained in the care of postoperative patients as well as in managing complications of cancer and cancer therapies. Responsibilities will include caring for selected inpatients on the Gynecologic Oncology service (ideally, patients previously seen in clinic or in the OR) and participation/presentation in daily attending rounds and weekly Tumor Board Conference. Prerequisites: Completion of OB/Gyn, Medicine and Surgery core clerkships.

RBIO 4006A: 4th Year Ob/Gyn Boot Camp (University Hospitals)

This is an elective for the fourth year student who is matching into an Ob/Gyn residency program during the current academic year. The objective of the course is to ensure that students have the knowledge and skills for the beginning of the intern year. We will accomplish these goals through a variety of learning techniques including hands on simulation, problem based learning and role playing. Students will learn skills for intern year including procedures, instruments, suturing, surgery simulation, and survival skills. Grading will be based on attendance and participation. Students completing this elective will have accomplished the Ob/Gyn milestone one objectives and will have documentation for their internship that these were met.

RBIO 4008A: Benign Gynecologic Surgery Acting Internship (University Hospitals)

The Benign Gynecologic Surgery Acting Internship provides students with a more advanced surgical experience that is outside the core Ob/Gyn rotation. This is a 4 week AI where students are an integral part of the inpatient gynecologic surgery service. The student will participate in surgeries, rounds, inpatient consults and Emergency Room consults. The student will attend weekly preoperative conferences and lectures. While on service, the student will be responsible for managing 2-3 inpatients and will report directly to the Chief Resident and/or Attending. The call responsibility consists of a one weekend call where the student rounds on the service and attends any emergency or add-on surgeries.

RBIO 4009A: Maternal-Fetal Medicine Acting Internship (University Hospitals)

This is an advanced elective with the Maternal Fetal Medicine division, focusing on the care of both inpatient and outpatient women with high risk pregnancies. The student will assume responsibilities similar to those of an intern under the direct supervision of MFM faculty and senior level residents. The goals of the acting internship are 1) To provide the student with more autonomy in direct patient care of complicated pregnancies and 2) To improve the students knowledge regarding the pathophysiology and management of complicated pregnancies. At the conclusion of the course learners will be able to assess patients with MFM related conditions including diabetes, hypertension, preterm labor, preeclampsia, etc. Acting interns will spend four weeks on the Antepartum service including 1-2 days per week in the outpatient setting with direct one-to-one training with a member of the MFM faculty. There will be an additional 1-2 weekend call days in conjunction with MFM faculty call in addition to five days per week of weekday coverage. Prerequisites: Completion of Core Clerkships in Obstetrics/Gynecology, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Surgery.
