Advanced Training in Vascular Neurology

The Vascular Neurology Fellowship at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, in collaboration with Case Western Reserve University, is a one-year, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited, individualized training program that is designed to develop expertise in the diagnosis, management and prevention of vascular neurologic disorders while caring for a diverse population of patients with a wide variety of neurovascular conditions.

Goals and Objectives of the Vascular Neurology Fellowship

The Vascular Neurology Fellowship is an individualized Fellowship that aims to train the next generation of Vascular Neurologists and to develop the skills needed to pursue their career objectives. To that end, fellows are assigned a mentor that aligns with their career objectives. Whether you plan an academic career or to be a Program Director at a Primary Stroke Center, we can provide you with the skills to design and run clinical trials, understand how to participate in and run a system of stroke centers and to head a stroke center.

For those pursuing a career in epidemiology or clinical trials, UH Cleveland Medical Center, in collaboration with Case Western Reserve University, offers a Graduate Certificate and a Master's in Science through the Clinical Research Science Program (CRSP). For those wishing to pursue further training in endovascular surgical neuroradiology, this fellowship fulfills the prerequisite of one year of vascular neurology in an ACGME-approved program.

Comprehensive Stroke Center Excellence

The Comprehensive Stroke Center at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center was one of the earliest in the nation designated as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by the Joint Commission and the American Heart/Stroke Association. We have consistently received the highest available Get with the Guidelines awards since 2008. The experienced faculty and staff treat patients with the most complex strokes and cerebrovascular conditions and coordinate stroke care across the health system. University Hospitals is affiliated with Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Each year the inpatient Stroke Service responds to approximately 1100 stroke alerts and discharges 1000 patients representing 60% of stroke discharges in the health system. Overall, our stroke patients are 65% ischemic, 24% intracerebral hemorrhage and 11% subarachnoid hemorrhage. University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center treats approximately 125 thrombolysis patients and performs 100 thrombectomies annually. We have transitioned from tPA to tenecteplase within our hospital system. Our current average door to needle time for thrombolysis is 22 minutes and door to groin time for thrombectomy is 44 minutes.

Training at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center

Training takes place at UH Cleveland Medical Center, a comprehensive care academic medical center with 1,032 beds, including the Reinberger Neuroscience Intensive Care Unit. Founded in 1866, this renowned academic medical center is the hub of the University Hospitals Health System of 18 hospitals and over 40 ambulatory centers employing 4,700 physicians and over 25,000 employees, making it one of the most integrated healthcare systems in the nation.
