Post-Residency Fellowship Training in Neuromuscular Medicine

The Neuromuscular Center offers post-residency fellowship training in Neuromuscular Medicine. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship consists of one year of training in clinical neuromuscular medicine, electrodiagnosis, neuromuscular ultrasound and muscle/nerve pathology. The fellows are actively involved in the care of both outpatient and inpatient neuromuscular patients.

The fellows will participate in the General Neuromuscular Clinic, the Muscle Clinic and the ALS program clinic (a multidisciplinary clinic of patients with ALS and other motor neuron diseases). All fellows will be trained in performance and interpretation of electrodiagnostic testing and neuromuscular ultrasound.

There is a large electromyography (EMG) laboratory system with the main hospital and three satellite locations with a total of nine examining rooms. Fellows also train in performing skin biopsy for small fiber neuropathy, single fiber EMG (electromyography) and ischemic forearm exercise testing. Training in the interpretation of nerve and muscles biopsy is done in collaboration with the Department of Neuropathology. Fellows also gain experience in the Autonomic Lab at UH Cleveland Medical Center and two satellite locations.

Frequent didactic lectures are given. The fellows are encouraged to be involved in clinical research. Detailed conferences in neuromuscular and electrodiagnostic medicine are held weekly.

The fellowship is designed to provide sufficient experience to satisfy the requirements of:

  • Added Qualification in Neuromuscular Medicine of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology
  • American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine

In 2022, we also started a non-ACGME advanced year neuromuscular fellowship in peripheral nerves for those graduates who have completed neuromuscular medicine fellowship and are seeking additional training in peripheral nerve pathologies.
