Nurse Practitioner Training Curriculum
Nurse Practitioners Post-Master’s Dermatology Training Curriculum
Existing Master’s in Nursing programs prepare nurse practitioners in the following role/population focused areas:
- Family medicine
- Women’s health/gender-related
- Psychiatry/mental health
(APRN Joint Dialogue Group, 2008)
Specialization, built upon the foundation of one of these focus areas, allows NPs to develop an even greater depth of knowledge and expertise in a discrete sub-specialty area. Despite the increased demand for dermatology NPs, limited opportunities exist for post-Master’s specialty education and clinical experiences necessary for the development of dermatology competencies. Dermatology NP Practice Standards and Scope of Practice were established to provide professional guidelines for dermatology NP practice (DNA, 2006).
Curriculum for UH NP Post-Master’s Dermatology Training is based on published research, A Core Curriculum for Dermatology Nurse Practitioners: Using Delphi Technique (Bobonich & Cooper, 2012). The consensus from both dermatology NPs and board-certified dermatologists identifies the essential knowledge, skills and abilities for the program. The primary focus of training will be on diagnosis and management of common and complex medical dermatology. However, NPs will have the opportunity for rotations through procedural dermatology to enhance their understanding of care paths for comprehensive dermatologic care.
Dermatology NP trainees will participate in:
- Didactic conferences
- Simulation labs
- Clinical case reviews
- Journal reviews
- In-clinic mentoring
- Quality improvement initiatives
- Scholarly research
NPs will be fully engaged with a team of highly committed board-certified dermatologists and experienced faculty in our interprofessional learning and practice environment. They will be monitored and evaluated for achievement of milestones and gradual progression into practice at the top of their licensure. Assessment tools will include chart reviews, direct observation, self-reflection, and case presentations.
Additionally, dermatology NPs will be required to complete the requisite peer review under the UH Credentialing policies and in accordance with Ohio Board of Nursing.
Upon completion of the training program, NP trainees will be eligible to sit for national Dermatology NP Certification through the Dermatology Nursing Certification Board for recognition of their specialized knowledge, skills and experience.
APPLICATIONS NOT BEING ACCEPTED
Application to the program is limited. Candidates considered for training are those with career goals to practice in a rigorous academic setting as part of the collaborative Dermatology Care Team with board-certified dermatologists at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center.
Graduates from our program have maintained their commitment to high quality Dermatology Team Care at UH and at the Veteran’s Administration in our Northeast Ohio community. Past graduates have also gone on to complete their doctorates in nursing and excelled as national leaders, researchers and educators. NPs may elect to pursue their doctorate (PhD or DNP) through the School of Nursing, which is separate from the NP Post-Master’s Dermatology Training program.
Eligible candidates must be graduates of an accredited Master’s NP program, board certified in a population-focused area. NPs must be licensed Advanced Practice Registered Nurse by the Ohio Board of Nursing and under the Ohio Revised Codes. They are hired as full-time employees with benefits and are credentialed through UH Cleveland Medical Center.
