The Clinical Trials Unit Leadership team leads the efforts of our clinical research program. As members of the Clinical Trials Unit Leadership team, medical oncologists discuss the fundamentals of clinical trials to provide additional information to patients.
Neal Meropol, M.D.
Associate Director for Clinical Research, Chief of the Division of Hematology and Oncology in the Department of Medicine at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
Dr. Meropol is well known for his expertise in treating patients with gastrointestinal cancers and the development of new treatments He is a clinical researcher whose work spans the spectrum from cancer prevention to treatment. He has conducted important studies of new treatments that have become standard of care. Additionally, Dr. Meropol has held a variety of national positions that impact cancer care and healthcare policy, including chair of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Cancer Research Committee. He is recognized by Cleveland Magazine as one of the region’s “Best Doctors”.
Smitha Krishnamurthi, M.D.
Medical Director, Clinical Trials Unit, Team Leader for Gastroenterology Cancer and Assistant Professor, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
As the Medical Director of the Clinical Trials Unit at UH Seidman Cancer Center, Dr. Krishnamurthi oversees this centralized resource that provides operational support for clinical investigation. Dr. Krishnamurthi is an assistant professor of medicine at Case Western Reserve University and is the Gastrointestinal Cancers Disease Team Leader at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center. Dr. Krishnamurthi is also the Director of the Clinical Trials Core Facility for the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center. Her research interests are in developmental therapeutics and gastrointestinal cancers. She is also recognized by Cleveland Magazine as one of the region’s “Best Doctors”.
Afshin Dowlati, M.D.
Co-Leader, Developmental Therapeutics Program and Director, Thoracic Oncology at UH Seidman Cancer Center and Associate Professor, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.
Dr. Dowlati is widely respected for his expertise in treating patients with lung cancer, and for the development of new drugs. Dr. Dowlati is an associate professor of medicine at Case Western Reserve University and provides leadership to the multidisciplinary Thoracic Disease Team at University Hospital’s Seidman Cancer Center. He runs a laboratory and clinical research program focused on the development of new therapies and is also recognized by Cleveland Magazine as one of the region’s “Best Doctors”.
