Clinical Research Facilities
All inpatients are cared for at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.
Fellows in our program provide care to outpatients in two locations, the main UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital campus and eventually will be seeing patients at a suburban location approximately 20 minutes east of the main campus. These experiences allow our fellows to care for outpatients from diverse backgrounds. All outpatient locations have on site radiology and laboratory services. Electroencephalography services for children are located on the main campus. Faculty members see outpatients at several additional suburban locations around Cleveland.
Pediatric Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
The pediatric epilepsy monitoring unit at UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital is a five bed unit equipped with state of the art continuous Video EEG monitoring equipment. The unit is staffed by nurses and technicians with special training in the monitoring of children with seizures and epilepsy. A pediatric epilepsy attending is in charge of the patients in the unit and staffs these patients with the pediatric in-patient team. Daily clinical and neurophysiology teaching rounds are held. Over 400 patients are monitored annually and we have an active epilepsy surgery program. Rotations through the epilepsy division will give exposure to neurophysiology of neonatal seizures, encephalopathies etc .In addition there is an annual eight week Epilepsy/EEG didactic course that is open to be attended by neurology residents, clinical and research epilepsy fellows and pediatric neurology residents.
Basic Science Research Facilities
Space consists of over 2000 square feet of newly renovated laboratory space designed to accommodate 8 individuals working at the bench, and an additional 100 square feet of space in the form of a dedicated microscope room. All of this space is housed within the newly completed Center for Translational Neuroscience located in the main School of Medicine building on the Case Western Reserve University campus. This space is contiguous with space occupied by the Department of Neurosciences. The main laboratory is fully equipped and lab members have access to standard and specialized equipment, including equipment to perform molecular biology research and protein biochemistry; microtome and microscopes for immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and RNA in situ hybridization; a confocal microscope; an electron microscope; a tissue culture facility equipped for ES cell work; a new state-of-the-art small animal surgical suite; and warm and cold rooms.
Authorized and trained lab members have full access to AAALAC-approved facilities located in the basement of the School of Medicine. Animals are maintained under the supervision of licensed veterinary staff. A fully equipped Behavioral Suite is available in these facilities.
Case Western Reserve University provides an excellent environment for research efforts of the type described in this application. A large group of investigators work in the areas of recombinant DNA technology, protein characterization, genetics and neurobiology. An extraordinary amount of work using mouse models of human disease occurs in the Departments of Genetics, Neurosciences, Otolaryngology and Pediatrics.
The Samuel J. Horwitz, MD Pediatric Learning Center (PLC) is a clinically oriented library focused on Pediatrics and geared to support resident and fellow education as well as assist in continued learning for all Rainbow faculty and staff.
The facility houses a printed reference collection, a number of computer-equipped work stations, and provides access to printing, scanning, and photocopy equipment.
The Center is staffed by a full-time librarian and is open 24/7 with a door key code. Along with printed books and journals, the library subscribes to a number of electronic resources, available from the PLC website, and provides a number of specialized research guides and tools. Library services include reference and mediated literature searching, database training, and interlibrary loan assistance.
