Interstitial and Diffuse Lung Disease

Interstitial and diffuse lung diseases of childhood are a group of difficult to diagnose rare diffuse lung diseases that can affect babies, children and teenagers. These diseases are often referred to as childhood interstitial lung disease (chILD) or Diffuse Parenchymal Lung Diseases (DPLDs), these rare lung diseases are often identified within the first few months of life.

Advanced Breathing Center (ABC)

ABC is bringing the latest advances in management of chronic ventilation – from state-of-the-art noninvasive options, to ventilators, CPAP and other devices to lessen the burden of breathing technology dependence on children and families.

Multidisciplinary Team of Experts Dedicated to Children’s Lung Conditions

Our multidisciplinary pediatric team includes board-certified and fellowship-trained pediatric pulmonologists, pulmonary nurses , nurse practitioners, respiratory and physical therapists, dietitians and child life specialists. We take a compassionate, well-rounded approach to care, keeping the whole child top of mind. In addition, we work closely with other departments and specialties to coordinate care for children with complex medical conditions.

Technology Dependence

The pediatric pulmonology center at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital leads a team that cares specifically for children who are dependent on ventilators, tracheostomy tubes or similar equipment to help them breathe. We employ a long-standing, multidisciplinary approach to the care of these medically complex and unique patients using up-to-date research and techniques. Our technology dependence clinic sees children of all ages who require respiratory support as result of prematurity, muscle weakness, lung disease and/or other indications.

Our physician-scientists translate discoveries into vital new therapies every day, including new drugs aimed at improving gene and protein function in cystic fibrosis patients.

Leading the Search for A Cure for Cystic Fibrosis

The LeRoy W. Matthews Cystic Fibrosis Center at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital is world-renowned for its care of children and adults with cystic fibrosis and is fully accredited with the highest possible rating by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Over the years, Rainbow physicians have helped advance the science and practice of Cystic Fibrosis which in turn has worked to extend the life expectancy of CF patients. In specific, Rainbow physicians and scientists have developed successful anti-inflammation therapies and led the first human gene therapy trials in the country.

Cystic Fibrosis Clinic

Our cystic fibrosis clinic for both children and adults is held in the KC and Ginny Bryan Pulmonary Diagnostic Center on the main campus of UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital, in Cleveland, Ohio.

Advancing Standards of Care through Innovative Research

As a primary pediatric affiliate of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, we conduct ongoing research in pulmonology and sleep disorders. Through this partnership, we set national standards for care and treatment, improving the outcomes and lives of children every day. For example, our specialists are part of an elite team leading the country toward a better understanding of and care for interstitial lung disease in children. We are enrolling patients in a newly initiated national interstitial patient registry through which we compare treatment outcomes and collaborate with other pulmonology programs across the U.S.
