Why Choose UH Rainbow for Pediatric Asthma Care?
Ranked among the best children’s hospitals in the country for pulmonology by U.S. News & World Report, UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospitals offers leading-edge asthma diagnosis and treatment and a team of nationally recognized asthma experts.
- A Partner in Your Child’s Asthma Care
-
At UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s, we work hard to form a partnership with the families we meet so we can learn what’s most important for each patient and family. We learn about your child’s environment, what activities they enjoy and what asthma triggers they may encounter. Just as no case of asthma is the same, we understand that no child is the same. Our goal is to help every child control their condition and manage their asthma symptoms so they can lead a full, happy and active life.
- A Dedicated Asthma Team
-
Our team of pediatric asthma specialists is spearheaded by internationally recognized physicians and researchers who are dedicated to improving outcomes for children with asthma. Our team also includes physicians from other specialties, nurse practitioners, respiratory therapists, dietitians and certified asthma educators - several of whom have more than a decade of experience on our asthma team. Other specialists on our asthma care include:
- Asthma Education and Resources for Families
-
Providing tools and resources for families is a key component of our asthma care plan. Educating our patients and families includes teaching safe and proper ways to administer asthma medications, learning to recognize potential asthma triggers and ways to avoid or combat them, and teaching children healthy habits that can help them improve their overall health while managing their asthma symptoms.
- Multidisciplinary Clinics
-
Children with asthma often experience other health complications, and may need to see multiple specialists. That’s why the pediatric asthma team at UH Rainbow works in collaboration with other pediatric specialty teams to establish multidisciplinary clinics, allowing patients and their families to get the care they need from multiple experts in one place.
Specialty clinics include:
- The Bryan Pediatric Pulmonary Center
-
Pediatric patients with asthma or other pulmonary conditions receive outpatient care in the Pediatric Pulmonary Center on the 6th floor of University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital (via the Charlie Brown elevators). Complete with exam rooms, procedure rooms, centralized reception and waiting areas, this suite is both beautiful and functional, with architecture optimized for infection control. The center was designed for the convenience of families, specifically so that pediatric patients may see multiple specialists in one visit, including pediatric nutritionists, behavioral specialists, gastroenterologists, otolaryngologists and social workers.
What is Asthma?
Asthma is a chronic condition that makes it difficult for children to breathe. Tubes called airways carry air in and out of our lungs. In children with asthma, these airways react to certain triggers and restrict a child's ability to breathe normally.
Asthma affects more than 7 million children in the U.S. and is one of the leading causes of hospitalization for children. Asthma symptoms in kids can be controlled with treatment, but it can cause scary and life-threatening experiences if not treated.
There are many types of asthma, and our team of specialists have the expertise to make accurate diagnoses and determine treatment plans for any type of pediatric asthma.

Asthma Research and Clinical Trials
UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital is part of an asthma research network called the Precision Interventions for Severe and/or Exacerbation Prone Asthma or PrecISE Network. It's an innovative network funded by the National Institutes of Health. As a member of this research group, our pediatric asthma specialists study innovative therapies to help patients who are unable to control the disease with standard therapies. This includes novel treatments like biological medications or biologics – which are new medications given by injection with promising results for severe asthma.
Our physicians also conduct other research studies to study novel treatments and devices for children and adults with asthma. We believe providing our patients with opportunities to participate in asthma clinical trials is a very important part of our program, giving our patients access to exciting new therapies. Please ask your child's doctor or health care provider what studies might be right for you.
