Care at Home

Once the patient is at home, it will be important to keep the surgical area clean and dry. The surgeon will give instructions about cleaning the area.

The surgical site may be tender or sore for several days after surgery. Give pain medication as ordered by the surgeon.

Children should not swim, ride bikes, jump or rough house until the surgeon tells them to. Walking and light activity are generally encouraged, but strenuous activity should be avoided.

Notify the surgeon if you notice the child has any of the following signs:

  • Fever and/or chills
  • Redness, swelling, or bleeding or other drainage from the incision site
  • Increased in pain around the incision site
  • Temperature greater than 102 F
  • Not eating or drinking; throwing-up more than a few times

The surgeon may give other instructions after the surgery, depending on what your child had done.
