About

Kelly Kirtland, DDS, MS, MA, MBA, is Chief of the Division of Pediatric Dentistry at University Hospitals Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and Clinical Assistant Professor, Pediatric Dentistry, at Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine.

She is a board-certified Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. Her clinical interests include treating children with significant medical issues, dental trauma and craniofacial syndromes, and educating the next generation of care providers.

Kirtland earned her undergraduate degree in biology from Temple University. Her dental degree is from Baylor College of Dentistry (now Texas A&M College of Dentistry). After completing a general practice residency at Denver Health Medical Center and a pediatric dental residency at MetroHealth Medical Center, Dr. Kirtland pursued an MS in Human Nutrition from the University of Bridgeport and an MA in Educational Administration and Dental Educator Certificate from the University of the Pacific, Benerd School of Education. Dr. Kirtland also received an MBA with a Certificate in Healthcare Administration from the University of Cincinnati, Lindner College of Business.

Her resume extends to active memberships and committee service with the International Association of Pediatric Dentistry, Fellow; American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, Diplomate, Examiner-Oral Comprehensive Exam, Qualifying Exam subcommittee member; American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, Fellow; North Central Society of Pediatric Dentistry, Secretary/Treasurer; American Dental Association, Integrated National Board Dental Examination (INBDE) test constructor; American Dental Education Association; American College of Healthcare Executives; Ohio Academy of Pediatric Dentists; Ohio State Dental Board; Ohio Medicaid Working Group; Ohio Dental Association; and the Greater Cleveland Dental Society. She will be inducted into the International College of Dentists this fall.

Kirtland currently serves the American Dental Association as a test constructor for the Integrated National Dental Board Exam, as a member of the Speakers’ Bureau for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and actively works to educate the next generation of pediatric dental providers. She frequently speaks on pediatric dental topics, at international, national, state and local dental society meetings.

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. These practitioner-industry relationships assist in developing new drugs, devices and therapies and in providing medical education aimed at improving quality of care and enhancing clinical outcomes. At the same time, UH understands that these relationships may create a conflict of interest. In providing this information, UH desires to assist patients in talking with their practitioners about industry relationships and how those relationships may impact their medical care.

UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
