Proton therapy is an effective and innovative treatment option for children and adults with certain cancers. Because it decreases some of the unnecessary dose to healthy tissue, proton therapy may cause fewer side effects and lead to a better quality of life after treatment. It is an ideal treatment option for children in particular, whose developing bodies are especially prone to radiation side effects. Not all patients benefit from this type of treatment. A consultation with one of our radiation oncologists will determine if proton therapy is right for you.

University Hospitals is the first and only health care system in Northeast Ohio to offer Proton Therapy.

Benefits include:

  • Less radiation to healthy tissue
  • Like conventional radiation therapy it can be used in conjunction with chemotherapy and/or surgery
  • May be an effective alternative to other radiation therapies (Gamma Knife, Cyber Knife, TomoTherapy)
  • May lower risk for developmental delays, growth abnormalities and secondary malignancies in children

Can be an effective treatment option for many cancers including:

  • Brain and spine tumors
  • Pediatric cancers
  • Breast cancer
  • Gastrointestinal cancers
  • Head and neck cancer
  • Lung cancer
