Orthopedic Curriculum (Clinical and Surgical Rotations)

The Clinical and Surgical Curriculum*** includes:

PGY-1 **

  • Six one-month rotations in general orthopedics (regional facilities)
  • One month anatomy/basic science class (Cadaver Provided)
  • One month musculoskeletal Radiology (Main Campus – University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center)
  • One month plastic surgery (Main Campus – UH Cleveland Medical Center)
  • One month emergency medicine (regional facility)
  • One month of Physical Medicine and Rehab (Beachwood/Avon Rehab Hospitals)

PGY-2

  • Two month trauma (UH Cleveland Medical Center /Level 1 Facility)
  • Five 2-month blocks of regional orthopedics (with emphasis on general*, foot and ankle, hand/upper extremity, and sports)

PGY-3

  • Three month spine (UH Cleveland Medical Center)
  • Two month elective trauma/adult reconstruction (Level I facility, Chandler Regional Hospital Arizona)
  • Three month pediatric orthopedic surgery (Cincinnati Children's Hospital)
  • Two month trauma (Level I facility, UH Cleveland Medical Center)
  • Two months of Sports/Upper Extremity (Regional Facilities)

PGY-4

  • Eight months of regional orthopedics (regional facilities) (with emphasis on general*, foot and ankle, hand/upper extremity, and sports)
  • Two month oncology/pathology (Main Campus – UH Cleveland Medical Center)

PGY-5

  • 10 months (five 2-month blocks) regional orthopedics (regional facilities) (with emphasis on General*, foot and ankle, hand/upper extremity, and sports)

* General orthopedics at regional facilities also provides residents with exposure to fellowship trained preceptors (sports, upper extremity, and total joints)

** The PGY-1 year fulfills the orthopedic RRC requirements, including a minimum of six months of structured education outside of orthopedics

*** Of the five-year curriculum we have set up, all but five months of our training completed is in the Greater Cleveland area.
