Orthopedic Curriculum (Clinical and Surgical Rotations)

Clinical and Surgical Curriculum includes:

PGY-1

  • Five one-month rotations in general orthopedics (UH Ahuja and Geauga Medical Centers)
  • One month Anatomy/Basic Science Lab (UH Cleveland Medical Center)
  • One month Musculoskeletal Radiology (UH Geauga Medical Center)
  • Two month of Trauma General Surgery (UH Cleveland Medical Center/ Level 1 Facility)
  • One month of Surgical Intensive Care Unit (UH Cleveland Medical Center)
  • One month Emergency Medicine (UH Geauga Medical Center)
  • One month of General Surgery (UH Geauga Medical Center)

** The PGY-1 year fulfills the orthopedic requirements for ACGME, including a minimum of six months of structured education outside of orthopedics

PGY-2

  • Two month rotation with Orthopedic Trauma (UH Cleveland Medical Center /Level 1 Facility)
  • Two month rotation with Orthopedic Oncology/Pathology (UH Cleveland Medical Center)
  • Four 2-month blocks of regional orthopedics (with emphasis on general orthopedics, foot and ankle, hand/upper extremity and sports)

PGY-3

  • Three month Orthopedic Spine Rotation (UH Cleveland Medical Center)
  • Two month elective Orthopedic Trauma/Adult Reconstruction (Chandler Regional Medical Center in Chandler, AZ/Level I Faculty)
  • Three month Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery (Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center)
  • Two 2 – month blocks of regional orthopedics (with emphasis on sports and adult reconstruction)

PGY-4

  • Twelve months of regional orthopedics with an emphasis on general orthopedics, foot and ankle, hand/upper extremity, and sports (UH Ahuja and Geauga Medical Centers)

PGY-5

  • Twelve months (six 2-month blocks) regional orthopedics with an emphasis on general orthopedics, foot and ankle, hand/upper extremity, and sports (UH Ahuja, Geauga and Portage Medical Centers)

* General orthopedics at UH Ahuja and Geauga Medical Centers also provides residents with exposure to fellowship-trained preceptors (sports, upper extremity, and total joints)
*** Of the five-year curriculum we have set up, all but five months of our training is completed in the Greater Cleveland area.
