Customized Nurse Practitioner Fellowship Program
University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, in conjunction with Case Western Reserve University, expands excellence in nursing by providing psychiatric nurse practitioners with a Nurse Practitioner (NP) Fellowship Program focused on community psychiatry.
This customized, postgraduate training experience in community mental health enhances Northeast Ohio’s mental health care delivery system through workforce development.
About the Nurse Practitioner Fellowship in Psychiatry
The Community Psychiatry NP Fellowship is a customized, postgraduate training program for psychiatric nurse practitioners. Grounded in core nursing concepts and focused on clinical skill-building, this psychiatric NP fellowship addresses transition gaps between academia and the workplace. We believe the transition year between graduate school and the first year of NP practice sets the stage for ongoing career success.
The Psychiatric NP Fellowship model, started in 2012, is based upon the successful first year psychiatric NP mentoring program established at a Cuyahoga County community mental health agency. Funds from the Medicaid Technical Assistance and Policy Program (MEDTAPP) and County Mental Health Board catalyzed the initial program development. The fellowship remains a collaborative effort with:
- Advanced practice psychiatric nurses
- Cuyahoga County Alcohol, Drug and Mental Health Services Board
- Several county mental health agencies
Goals of the Community Psychiatry NP Fellowship
The goal of this NP fellowship is to develop psychiatric nurse practitioners with sophisticated clinical and leadership skills, preparing them for robust, fulling careers, which will likewise enhance the region’s community mental health care system. In 2014, this collaboration became the Community Psychiatry Nurse Practitioner Externship, eventually renamed a fellowship, all part of Case Western Reserve University.
This NP fellowship in community psychiatry seeks newly graduating psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNPs) with a desire to embed their ongoing work with the vulnerable and underserved populations in the Northeast Ohio region.
