Chair's Letter

As central to the mission of University Hospitals - To Heal. To Teach. To Discover. - the UH Ear, Nose & Throat Institute faculty devote themselves to advancing otolaryngology by training residents, the future leaders in our field. Our five-year residency training program provides exposure to all subspecialty areas within otolaryngology: head and neck surgery/oncology, laryngology/voice and swallowing, otology/neurotology, pediatrics, facial plastics, trauma and reconstructive surgery, skull base, sinus and rhinology and sleep apnea.

The caliber of faculty, with wide varieties of fellowship training at the top institutions in the U.S., as well as the size of our faculty, with multiple sub-specialists within each area, set us apart as one of the most sought after residency programs in the country. In addition, residents have the advantage of training in a variety of settings, including University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center (Level 1 Trauma), UH Seidman Cancer Center, UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital, MetroHealth Medical Center (Level 1 Trauma), Louis Stokes VA Medical Center and outpatient surgery centers. Together our faculty and staff provide the latest in leading-edge medical care for patients of all ages, one patient at a time.

Our innovative and comprehensive patient care has been consistently recognized by our U.S. News and World Report rankings in the top 20 of all medical centers across the country. Our residents have exposure to the latest advances within otolaryngology, including a cutting-edge temporal bone lab, robotic and minimally invasive surgery, highly successful cochlear implant team, endoscopic and open skull base resections and most recently we became the first center in Northeast Ohio to offer Inspire surgery as a treatment option for sleep apnea.

In addition, our residents have educational opportunities which include didactic lectures, journal clubs, temporal bone labs, cadaver dissections, microvascular, otology and trauma topics as well as the opportunity to present research at national conferences. Research opportunities abound with engaged and approachable faculty complemented by the strong basic science and research programs. Finally, life in Cleveland allows for the best in life-work balance during busy, productive residency training.

Our program provides comprehensive training in otolaryngology focused on clinical excellence. Our residency positions those who desire further training to be competitive and gain admission to the most sought after fellowships in the U.S., allowing graduates to populate leadership positions in academic medical centers around the U.S. Further, those that seek a general ENT career will leave reassured in their clinical competence. Overall, we are committed to training the future leaders in our field and appreciate your interest in the Case Western Reserve University/University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center ENT residency.
