Dr. Desai is a Nephrologist at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center as well as at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. He is also a faculty member at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He currently serves as the Chief of the Section of Nephrology and is the Director of Glomerular Diseases Program at University Hospitals. He is also the Associate Program Director for Nephrology Fellowship Program.

Dr. Desai obtained his undergraduate degree in Integrated Life Sciences from Kent State University and medical doctorate from the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). He completed residency and nephrology fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, IL. His medical interests include glomerulonephritis, hemodialysis, vascular access and cardiovascular complications of CKD.

Dr. Desai is married, has three children and enjoys reading, working in the garden, cultivating bonsai trees and hanging out in coffee shops. He also enjoys playing soccer and guitar and is learning how to play the piano.

Dr. Kharotia is an academic hospitalist at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center and faculty member at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He is also the Course Director for Internal Medicine Acting Internship at UH/VA. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Health and Diseases with a minor in physiology from The University of Toronto and then went on to complete his medical education from Wayne State School of Medicine in Detroit. He did his residency training at UH Cleveland Medical Center and joined the ranks of faculty in July 2021. Most of his clinical time is spent as a hospitalist on the VA Medicine Services or as an attending in the VA Emergency Department.

His interests include medical student and resident education as well as physical fitness. In his free time, Dr. Kharotia is either traveling with his wife, visiting his family back in Toronto or playing basketball, golf or badminton.

Dr. Mourad is an internist at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center and Associate Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She completed her undergraduate training at Duke University, medical school at Case Western Reserve University, and internal medicine residency at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. Dr. Mourad is a certified Health and Wellness Coach and serves as Co-Director of the Resident Coaching Program. She has a special interest in physician wellness and narrative medicine and enjoys art, outdoor sports, and traveling.

Paul Shaniuk, MD grew up in the Cleveland suburbs, and he studied at nearby Baldwin Wallace University for his undergraduate education before completing medical school at the Ohio State University in 2012. He graduated from the Med-Peds Residency program at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in 2016 and is board certified in both internal medicine and pediatrics. After serving as Med-Peds Chief Resident, he joined the faculty in 2017, and he works primarily as a hospitalist at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, and occasionally as a part-time hospitalist at UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s hospital.

His academic interests include medical education, clinical problem solving, quality improvement, patient safety and high-value care. He is a point of care ultrasound enthusiast and is one of the core POCUS educators for the UH Internal Medicine residency. Dr. Shaniuk loves spending time with his wife and three children, but if he isn’t reading to his children, you may find him enjoying one of his many hobbies such as playing the piano, grilling on his Weber charcoal grill, watching one of his beloved Cleveland sports teams or biking in the beautiful Cleveland Metroparks.

Dr. Singh is the Director of the Firm Clinics at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. A graduate of the combined BA/MD program at Boston University, she completed her internal medicine residency training at Boston University Medical Center. 

Dr. Singh has a special clinical research interest in gender-based disparities in primary care and ambulatory patient safety issues. She is actively involved in teaching and academic activities both with residents at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, as well as with medical students at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. One of her valuable contributions was the development of the primary care block for interns. Dr. Singh enjoys spending time with her family, hiking and traveling.

Deena W. Segal has been an employee with University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center in the Department of Medicine since June 1990; and has the pleasure working with the Internal Medicine Residency program since 2000. She was awarded the ACGME Program Coordinator Excellence award in 2009 and the APDIM Program Administrators Excellence award in 2020.

During her tenure, Deena has been involved with several committees within the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine along with presenting at conferences for Program Administrators.  She has served as the Chair of GME Resident and Fellowship Committee from 2013-2015 at CMC and then nationally with the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine as the Chair-Elect, Chair and Past Chair 2015-2018.  She remains active with the Alliance.

Deena and Dr. Armitage have worked together for over 20 years and are among a handful of Internal Medicine Residency programs nationally that have similar longevity as a team.
