Unique Aspects of the Internal Medicine Residency Program

Outstanding Clinical Training
Our residents receive outstanding clinical training working with approachable faculty who love to teach in two nationally recognized institutions, UH Cleveland Medical Center and the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. We also have innovative programs in Ambulatory Care (the VA-based Center of Outpatient Education) and International Health.

Residents Across the Internal Medicine Residency Program
Currently there are 148 residents in the Internal Medicine Residency Program, including residents in the following areas:
- Categorical PGY1
- Preliminary PGY1
- PGY2
- PGY3
Our Med-Peds program has 16 residents, and we have four Medical Genetics/Internal Medicine residents.

Mentorship and the Resident Coaching Program
All house staff are assigned to one of the program directors or associate program directors who are designated to be that resident's Academic Advisor. In addition, all interns are assigned to one of the chief residents based on their interests to begin the mentoring program. The Academic Advisors and Chief Resident mentors assist residents in obtaining additional mentors based upon their career choice.
As part of our commitment to resident wellness, we started our Resident Coaching Program in 2016, led by Associate Program Directors, Dr. Simran Singh and Dr. Ronda Mourad. Categorical interns form a three-year longitudinal partnership with a trained faculty coach, distinct from their mentor or Academic Advisor, to assist with self-reflection, goal-setting and professional identity development. Based on the principles of positive psychology, the coaching process helps residents maximize their growth and recognize their full potential. Coaches also provide support for residents as they face personal stressors or career-related challenges.
Recently, our PGY2 and PGY3 residents also instituted a mentorship program, which focuses on communicating with new interns immediately following the match and helping with the transition into internship. We conduct an anonymous survey of our residents every year and ask focused questions on issues such as mentorship to make sure we are meeting the residents' needs and always improving the program.
