Conferences

The Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center offers numerous didactic conferences that complement teaching on clinical rotations and are essential for all fellows to attend, including:

  • Cardiac Catheterization Conference
  • Cardiovascular Research Conference
  • Case Clinical Conference
  • Combined Cardiology/Cardiac Surgery Conference
  • Core Curriculum Conferences
  • EP/ECG Conference
  • Echocardiography/Imaging Conference
  • Journal Club
  • Morbidity & Mortality Conference

The PowerPoint slides from conferences are archived on a shared server on the UH network for future viewing. Core curriculum lectures are repeated on a yearly basis and sectional conferences are designed to cover the major pathologies and cardiovascular skills and emergencies.

Monday Conferences

EP Conference, 8 - 9 a.m.

Subspecialty conference directed principally towards EP faculty and fellows and the general cardiology fellow rotating on electrophysiology. However, it is open to all faculty and general cardiology fellows.

Echocardiography Conference, 12:30 - 1:30 p.m.

The echo fellow presents interesting cases with the echo faculty and reviews a topic relevant to one of the cases. "Echo Jeopardy" and "Echo Survivor" are periodic offerings. Other educational imaging modalities (MRI, CT, nuclear) are discussed as well. Advanced imaging (CCT, CMR, PET-CT) conference rotates on a monthly basis.

Tuesday Conferences

Cardiac Catheterization Conference at UH, 7 - 8 a.m.

Case-based review of left ventricle, coronary and peripheral vascular angiography, hemodynamics and relevant lectures given by interventional fellows and faculty. Vascular medicine conference (MRI, CT, nuclear and echocardiography), which includes vascular surgery faculty and house staff, rotates on a monthly basis.

Department of Medicine Grand Rounds, Noon - 1 p.m.

Weekly conference for the Department of Medicine with renowned national and international lecturers.

Wednesday Conferences

Clinical Case Conference/Morbidity and Mortality 7:30 - 8:30 a.m.

Conferences are prepared, with the guidance of a faculty mentor, and presented by fellows. This conference generally serves as a platform to critically analyze clinical studies and discuss the basis for ACC/AHA guidelines for clinical care in a specific area amongst the faculty. M&M is held the last Wednesday of the month.

CRISS conference, 4:30 - 5:30 p.m.

The Cardiovascular Research Institute Seminar Series (CRISS) in which the University Hospitals Harrington Heart & Vascular Institute, Case Cardiovascular Research Institute and invited laboratories present a critical and in-depth review of a research project to MD and PhD heart and vascular scientists, cardiology faculty and fellows. Featured are seminars related to basic cardiovascular physiology, molecular biology and vascular biology. General cardiology fellows present their proposed research projects at this conference and the completed research projects are presented at Cardiology Grand Rounds.

Thursday Conferences

Fellows' Conference, 7 - 8 a.m.

This conference comprises faculty lectures relevant to cardiovascular anatomy, physiology/pathophysiology, hemodynamics and basic, clinical and epidemiologic sciences. Initially, the conference is front-loaded (fellows' school) with daily lectures covering basic cardiologic skills and cardiac emergencies management during the month of July; throughout the remainder of the year, the conference is held on Thursday mornings, covering core topics that are tested on ABIM cardiology board exam. Journal Club with Dr. Zidar and hemodynamics with Dr. Askari rotate on a monthly basis.

Cardiology Grand Rounds at UH, Noon - 1 p.m.

Conference with topics in Cardiovascular Medicine presented by invited nationally and internationally renowned physician-scientists as well as UH Cleveland Medical Center faculty.

Friday Conferences

Cardiac Catheterization Conference at VA, 7:30 - 8:30 a.m.

Combined conference with inpatient cardiology service, cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology. Case-based review of left ventricle, coronary and peripheral vascular angiography, hemodynamics and echocardiogram. The fellow rotating through the laboratory gives a brief presentation on topics related to cardiac catheterization and invasive management of cardiovascular diseases.

EP Conference, 8 - 9 a.m.

The EP conference is directed principally towards EP faculty and fellows, as well as general cardiology fellow rotating on electrophysiology. Topics covered include invasive and non-invasive assessment and management of arrhythmias, as well as interesting cases, are presented. Please note that attendance is taken at all conferences and compliance is discussed at the semi-annual meeting with the program director.
