Adult Congenital Heart Disease Rotation

Fellows in the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Rotation at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, in collaboration with Case Western Reserve University, engage in active participation and care of patients seen in the clinic and in consultation. In doing the rotation, they will demonstrate the following:

  • An ability to diagnose and manage adult congenital heart diseases (ACHD) in hospitalized and clinic patients
  • An appreciation for genetic risk in various forms of congenital heart disease
  • An understanding of the various forms of congenital heart disease, the pathophysiology and corrective and palliative surgeries
  • Competency with emphasis on anatomic diagnosis, noninvasive imaging and management of chronic complications of these patients
  • Expertise in clinical collaboration with other physicians and health care professionals participating in such care
  • Proficiency in the provision of inpatient and outpatient care of the patients
  • Skill in playing a meaningful role in patient and family education regarding heart disease and its management

COCATS Level One: Six hours formal didactics / Four-week rotation "strongly recommended"


Clinical Content and Fellow Responsibilities

The fellow will be responsible for participating in all outpatient clinics and all consultations pertinent to the rotation.

  • General ACHD Clinics: Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday
  • Marfan/Connective Tissue Disorder Clinic: Second Monday every month

The remaining days, the fellow will spend time in imaging (TTE/TEE), read studies with the attending, and follow the sonographers. In the Structural/EP interventions, the fellow can participate in the proceedings of the study with the pediatric cardiology fellow who is assigned in the lab.


Weekly Academic Schedules

The weekly academic schedules are as follows:

  • Congenital case management conference on Wednesday and Friday at UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital
  • All lectures and conferences with pediatric cardiology fellows (the exception is Wednesday morning when Adult Cardiology CCC/M&M conferences should be attended)
