Emergency Medical Services Rotation

The Case Western Reserve University/UH Cleveland Medical Center Emergency Medicine Services Rotation program is now accepting applications for medical students for the 2019-2020 academic year.

As a student rotating in the Emergency Department, you will complete 14 eight-hour shifts alongside emergency medicine attendings and residents. You will have the opportunity to manage acutely ill patients with a broad scope of medical problems as well as traumatic injuries. Students also will attend various procedure workshops, including ultrasound, airway and splinting as well as attending resident education sessions. In addition, those applying to emergency medicine residency will receive personalized one-on-one advising from faculty.

Objectives

  • The student will be exposed to all aspects of emergency care in an urban academic, level 1 trauma center.
  • The student will learn to perform primary and secondary assessments and be exposed to basic emergency medicine skills, including:
    • Diagnostic work-ups and resuscitation of complex medical patients
    • Initial evaluation, management, and stabilization of trauma patients
    • Airway management
    • Point of care ultrasound
    • Wound repair
    • Fracture splinting
    • Peripheral and central IV placement
  • The student will learn to prioritize diagnostic testing in a timely and cost-efficient manner.

Duties: The student will participate in the evaluation and management of the patient as the student's skills allow. Students are encouraged to independently evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients under the direct supervision of an attending and/or resident physician. At the conclusion of the rotation, the student will present a patient case and associated topic pertaining to emergency medicine.

Prerequisites: Completion of Medicine, Surgery, and OB-GYN Core Clerkships.

*All students must have a passing USMLE step 1 score to rotate. We do accept osteopathic rotators; However, we do not accept COMLEX as a substitution.
