New Specialized Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center Opens

The Congenital Heart Collaborative is expanding to care for the growing number of adults who are survivors of congenital heart disease (CHD). CHD, the most common birth defect affecting about 1% of babies, now has more adults with the disease than children – due to the advances in treatment.

Most of these patients have undergone repair during infancy and some in childhood. It's important to remember that these patients are not cured but only repaired and often require re-interventions. They are at increased risk of developing arrhythmias, stenosed or leaky valves, pulmonary hypertension, heart failure and premature death. Many of them have multiple comorbid medical & psychological issues that require care from dedicated specialists outside of adult cardiology. This expanding population needs lifelong follow-up with a specialized team of physicians and nurses who understand their unique complexities.
