About

Robert Richardson, MD, is an award-winning general adult neurologist, medical educator and electromyographer, with nearly 25 years of practice experience and medical leadership.

He is a senior attending physician at University Hospitals of Cleveland, Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine and Neurology at Case Western Reserve University, and Clinical Assistant Professor at Ohio University.

After attending high school in Germany, Dr. Richardson completed his undergraduate education at Stanford University and medical school at Case Western Reserve University. This was followed by an internal medicine internship at Mt. Sinai of Cleveland, a neurology residency at University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve University, and an electromyography fellowship at Case Western Reserve University.

Upon completing fellowship, Dr. Richardson practiced independently in the Cleveland area for nearly two decades before returning to University Hospitals. During that time, he led successful efforts at multiple hospitals for certifications, then multiple recertifications, from JCAHO as Primary Stroke Centers. He has taught medical students and residents for over 20 years. He was in the medical staff leadership at St. Vincent Charity Medical Center for many years, culminating in two terms as its Medical Staff President.

Dr. Richardson speaks on stroke, multiple sclerosis and other neurological topics in Cleveland’s African-American community because he believes knowledge improves access to medical care. He is a longstanding board member and medical advisor for the Kym Sellers Foundation, a Cleveland-based foundation providing education on multiple sclerosis.

He was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and has lived all over the USA, in England and in Germany.

Industry Relationships

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. These practitioner-industry relationships assist in developing new drugs, devices and therapies and in providing medical education aimed at improving quality of care and enhancing clinical outcomes. At the same time, UH understands that these relationships may create a conflict of interest. In providing this information, UH desires to assist patients in talking with their practitioners about industry relationships and how those relationships may impact their medical care.

UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
