Biography

  • Senior Instructor, CWRU School of Medicine

Dr. Irene Zeller, OD, is a pediatric optometrist at University Hospitals Rainbow Center for Women & Children located in Midtown. She is a senior instructor at Case Western Reserve University. She first became interested in optometry as a profession in high school, where she was awarded the Bausch and Lomb Science Award for her performance in biology. Winning this award provided her with a scholarship to attend the University of Rochester in New York, where many companies related to the visual sciences were located, including Eastman Kodak, The Rochester Institute of Technology, and Bausch and Lomb. Learning about these industries lead her to pursue a career in optometry. She attended the University of Houston College of Optometry and graduated with her Doctorate of Optometry in 2002.

After optometry school, Dr. Zeller worked in a hospital-based clinical setting in Pennsylvania, where she practiced medical optometry. After getting married, she and her husband decided to move back to Ohio where she was born and raised. She worked in a private practice setting in Westlake for many years, providing comprehensive eye care and contact lenses services to patients of all ages.

Now Dr. Zeller is honored to care for the patients at the UH Rainbow Center for Women & Children. Her clinical interests include myopia control, fitting of contact lenses in the pediatric population, and examining children with special needs. She is also concerned about the rise in diabetes in the younger population and educates on diabetes prevention.

Industry Relationships

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. These practitioner-industry relationships assist in developing new drugs, devices and therapies and in providing medical education aimed at improving quality of care and enhancing clinical outcomes. At the same time, UH understands that these relationships may create a conflict of interest. In providing this information, UH desires to assist patients in talking with their practitioners about industry relationships and how those relationships may impact their medical care.

UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
