Biography

Joseph Gibbons, MD is a hematologist-oncologist at University Hospitals Seidman Cancer Center and Associate Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He sees patients at UH Cleveland Medical Center in Cleveland. Dr. Gibbons is also the Chairperson of the UH Institutional Review Board.

Dr. Gibbons is board certified in Hematology, Internal Medicine, and Medical Oncology. His special interests include cancer clinical trials and applied research ethics. He joined the UH Seidman Cancer Center medical staff in 1998.

Dr. Gibbons earned his undergraduate degree from Hiram College in Hiram, Ohio, and his medical degree from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, Ohio. He completed his residency at the University of Toledo Medical Center in Internal Medicine. He also completed his specialty fellowship training in Hematology-Oncology at the University of Michigan and the University of Alabama. Dr. Gibbons also completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Microbiology and Immunology from The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

A dedicated researcher, Dr. Gibbons has worked on multiple publications that include Cancer Chemotherapy Pharmacology. He was Co-Principal Investigator on an NIH grant, “Creating Internet-based Research Review, Approval, and Monitoring for Global Health Research Collaboration.” His clinical and research interests include Sarcoma, Neuro-Oncology, Gastrointestinal Cancer, and Liver Cancers.

Dr. Gibbons is a member of Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research, the American Society of Hematology, the American Society for Clinical Oncology, and the American Medical Association.

Industry Relationships

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. These practitioner-industry relationships assist in developing new drugs, devices and therapies and in providing medical education aimed at improving quality of care and enhancing clinical outcomes. At the same time, UH understands that these relationships may create a conflict of interest. UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
