About
Philip S. Fastenau, PhD is the former Director of Clinical Neuropsychology for the Neurological Institute at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center in Northeast Ohio and a Professor of Neurology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He has been actively engaged in clinical consultation, research and training since 1993. He has been at UH Cleveland Medical Center since 2008, where approximately 40% of his time supports four multidisciplinary neurosurgery programs (Epilepsy Surgery Program, Deep Brain Stimulation, Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus Clinic, Cochlear Implant Surgery Program), 40% supports the UH Concussion Program jointly housed in the Neurological Institute and Sports Medicine Institute, and 20% is devoted to consultations for evaluating and treating memory and other cognitive changes associated with neurodegenerative disorders (like Alzheimer’s disease) or other neurological conditions (e.g., stroke, brain tumor, multiple sclerosis).
Dr. Fastenau has been actively engaged in research throughout his career. His research has focused mostly on epilepsy and the improvement of clinical neuropsychological testing methods. His research has been funded by various federal agencies, including the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), Center for Disease Control (CDC), and U.S. Rehabilitation Services Administration (US RSA), as well as by Epilepsy Foundation, other nonprofit health organizations, and private industry. Dr. Fastenau has published over 70 journal articles and chapters and has presented over 225 peer-reviewed papers and invited addresses. He has received national awards/honors from the NINDS, American Academy of Neurology (AAN), American Psychological Association (APA), American Epilepsy Society (AES), and Epilepsy Foundation (EF).
Dr. Fastenau has been actively engaged in training at all levels, including undergraduates, graduate/medical students, interns/residents, and postdoctoral fellows. He has also been an invited lecturer/presenter at regional, national and international continuing education programs/courses for psychologists and physicians. He is on the training faculty for the University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve University fellowship programs in Neuropsychology, Epilepsy, Movement Disorders, Behavioral Neurology, and Sports Medicine. Trainees under Dr. Fastenau’s supervision have published extensively with him, and many have received awards from national and international organizations, including the International Neuropsychological Society (INS), APA, EF, and American Society of Neuroradiology.
Finally, Dr. Fastenau has been very active in service to professional/medical organizations, government agencies, and scientific journals. He has served on many NIH Study Sections, served on the Editorial Boards for multiple peer-reviewed journals, and reviewed papers for many journals and conferences. Dr. Fastenau has chaired national committees/divisions within the National Academy of Neuropsychology (NAN), Sports Neuropsychology Society (SNS), and AES and served on other committees for these same organizations and for APA and INS. Dr. Fastenau is an elected Fellow of the NAN, APA, AES, and SNS.

At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
