Biography

  • Professor, CWRU School of Medicine
  • Director, Neurology Resident Clinic, UH Cleveland Medical Center

Michael Devereaux, MD accepted an invite in 1977 from Joseph Foley, MD, to come to Cleveland and start a Department of Neurology at Mt. Sinai Hospital as part of the CWRU Medical School, making him a faculty member now for over 40 years. In 1998 he moved from Mt. Sinai to the Department of Neurology at University Hospitals, where he continues to be active.

During his legacy at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, he has been part of the administration and part-time Chief Medical Officer at UH Richmond Medical Center. His first love has been and continues to be clinical and academic neurology, with a particular interest in teaching. He is now part of the Epilepsy Center faculty. At the same time, he directs the Continuity Clinic at UH. His primary teaching interests are general neurology on the inpatient general neurology service, outpatient neurology in the Continuity Clinic, and EEG interpretation with Epilepsy Fellows in the Epilepsy Center. He also teaches a week of the 8-week EEG/Epilepsy course offered twice per year. For more than 35 years, he has given lectures to the Neurosciences block at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine on various topics, including an Introduction to Epilepsy and Headache. During his years, he has found some time to contribute articles and chapters to the literature, edit several chapters, and co-edit one book.

His early education through high school was in various locations in and around LA, but he ventured to Stanford for his college years. He earned his medical degree from Baylor Medical School in Houston to train as a cardiovascular surgeon but decided instead to become a neurologist. Dr. Devereaux states it was the best academic decision he ever made. Following Medical school, it went back to SoCal for five years of internship, residency, and a year of neuro-ophthalmology fellowship training at LAC/USC Medical Center, followed by a 2-year military obligation at the Philadelphia Naval Hospital. While there, little did he know he would meet a colleague, Joseph Foley, MD, then the Director of Neurology of the Department of Medicine at University Hospitals that would eventually guide his career to Cleveland.

On a personal note, and due to his long-standing career in Cleveland, he has grown to love it here. Also, his wife became so active in local politics and volunteer work; it made it difficult even to consider leaving. In his free time, Dr. Devereaux enjoys skiing in the winter and cycling in the warmer months, with several weeklong cycling events annually of late. He continues to be politically active as he thinks all physicians should be. Since 2004 he has been the chairman and, in recent years, co-chairman of DOHCS (Doctors Organized for Health Care Solutions), a local group of progressive physicians supporting politicians interested in improving health care delivery. He plans on continuing to be active in the teaching program as long as he can contribute.

Industry Relationships

University Hospitals is committed to transparency in our interactions with industry partners, such as pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device companies. At UH, we disclose practitioner and their family members’ ownership and intellectual property rights that are or in the process of being commercialized. In addition, we disclose payments to employed practitioners of $5,000 or more from companies with which the practitioners interact as part of their professional activities. These practitioner-industry relationships assist in developing new drugs, devices and therapies and in providing medical education aimed at improving quality of care and enhancing clinical outcomes. At the same time, UH understands that these relationships may create a conflict of interest. In providing this information, UH desires to assist patients in talking with their practitioners about industry relationships and how those relationships may impact their medical care.

UH practitioners seek advance approval for certain new industry relationships. In addition, practitioners report their industry relationships and activities, as well as those of their immediate family members, to the UH Office of Outside Interests annually. We review these reports and implement management plans, as appropriate, to address conflicts of interest that may arise in connection with medical research, clinical care and purchasing decisions.
