UH provides sports medicine services via direct athletic trainer and team physician coverage to 33 high schools in the seven-county Northeast Ohio region. UH also provides sports medicine services as team physicians to an additional 18 high schools and seven colleges. Our athletic trainers are health care professionals who collaborate with the team physicians to optimize athletes’ ability to participate in their sports. An athletic trainer is schooled in the prevention, examination and diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and certain medical conditions in order to minimize re-injury and to facilitate the safe return to athletics. Athletic trainers also participate in UH-sponsored return-to-play and performance enhancement programs along with research opportunities to establish evidence to justify such programs to maximize an athlete’s performance. ATHLETIC TRAINERS The orthopedics program at University Hospitals is recognized as one of the best in the country and takes a collaborative approach to the diagnosis and treatment of orthopedic conditions. With new leadership and a new NFL partnership, UH is revolutionizing the way sports medicine care is delivered. The multifaceted sports medicine program offers comprehensive specialty and subspecialty care. Our highly trained orthopedic physicians received their education from prestigious national and international institutions, and they work across multiple disciplines to determine the best possible course of action throughout the entire diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation process. As a group, as well as on an individual level, these widely published physicians are advancing the field of sports medicine. Through our robust research program, the team explores innovative and leading-edge techniques with a focus on implementing their research outcomes to ultimately enhance player performance, prevent future injury and optimize overall health for athletes at all levels of play. From elite professionals to school-aged youth athletes, and the middle-aged weekend warriors in between, our athletes receive total care that allows them to regain movement and see performance improvements. Surgeons at UH Sports Medicine use a minimally invasive approach to treatment whenever possible. Many surgical techniques today are less invasive, and the procedures result in less pain, less bleeding and shorter recovery time, allowing athletes to get back in the game faster. UH prides itself on ensuring patients receive the most appropriate, responsive treatment, and all of our sports medicine services are available at multiple outpatient primary care clinics and physical therapy centers.
