Valda Clark Christian, JD, joined UH in February 2019 as the System’s Chief Compliance Officer. In this role, Ms. Clark Christian is responsible for leading a best-in-class compliance and ethics program and for promoting a culture of integrity and transparency for both the hospital and physician programs. Ms. Clark Christian’s work includes developing and implementing an annual compliance work plan, addressing compliance inquiries and reports of compliance concerns, assessing risks, supporting disclosures of interests and proactively managing potential conflicts of interest. She also designs and implements compliance training and education strategies, develops compliance policy and procedure, and oversees investigations and audit response efforts. Ms. Clark Christian provides compliance counsel and support to inform executive decision-making. She provides periodic formal reports to the UH Executive Team as well as to the Audit and Compliance Committee of the UH Board of Directors.
Ms. Clark Christian is an experienced health care leader having served for 20 years cumulatively as legal counsel to health systems, health care payers and as a health facility regulator. She has more than 10 years of experience in corporate compliance with extensive experience creating and implementing compliance programs. She is certified in both healthcare compliance (CHC) and in healthcare privacy compliance (CHPC). Immediately prior to her UH role, Ms. Clark Christian was Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer for Medstar Health, Inc., the largest health care provider in the Mid-Atlantic region. Before joining MedStar, Ms. Clark Christian served as the lead compliance counsel for Jackson Health System of the Public Health Trust of Miami-Dade County in Miami, Florida and as the general counsel for the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration in Tallahassee, Florida.
Ms. Clark Christian earned her law degree from the Yale Law School and her bachelor’s degree in history and Spanish from Williams College. Additionally, Ms. Clark Christian obtained an executive education certificate from the Aresty Institute of the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. She is an active member of the American Health Lawyers Association and the Health Care Compliance Association and previously served as a member of the Williams College Board of Trustees. Ms. Clark Christian routinely engages in her community of residence, tutoring for elementary school Math Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA) programs in Maryland and mentoring adults and teens in Florida. In 2010, she was awarded an In the Company of Women Award recognizing her as a Miami-Dade County woman leader and acknowledging her contributions to her community in celebration of Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day.
